Emotiva Audio Corporation was founded in Nashville, Tennessee by Dan Laufman, whose career had previously encompassed senior roles at Harman International, Lanzar Audio Corp., and Recoton's Premium Audio Group. Frustration with the escalating cost of top-tier audio equipment led Laufman to pursue a model that would make high-performance sound accessible to a wider audience.

Emotiva is credited as the first direct-to-consumer brand in high-end audio, selling exclusively online at a time when this was far from standard practice in the industry. By removing the traditional retail distribution chain, the company was able to offer strong performance at competitive prices. One of the first products was the DMC-1 preamplifier, which debuted in 2005. To build consumer confidence, Emotiva introduced a no-questions-asked 30-day return policy from the outset.

Today Emotiva produces a broad range of home audio electronics including preamplifiers, power amplifiers, integrated amplifiers, AV processors, loudspeakers, and subwoofers. The company continues to operate from Nashville and maintains its founding philosophy of delivering performance-focused audio equipment without the premiums associated with conventional retail distribution.
