The Emotiva XPA-5 Gen3 is a five-channel home theatre power amplifier sitting at the centre of Emotiva's XPA Gen3 modular range, which spans 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11 channels. Where the XPA-3 Gen3 addresses a three-channel front stage and the XPA-7 Gen3 serves larger multi-zone configurations, the XPA-5 Gen3 is engineered as a complete five-channel solution for standard 5.x surround systems, whilst retaining the capacity to expand to seven channels through factory module installation.
Modular Architecture
The XPA-5 Gen3 is built on a shared chassis platform that accommodates up to seven amplifier module slots. The amplifier ships with five High-Powered Single Channel Modules installed, leaving two slots available for future expansion. Each module operates as a fully independent amplifier stage with separate power rails and separate signal paths, so the amplifier functions as five individual monoblocks sharing a common power supply infrastructure rather than a single multi-channel design. Should requirements change, the chassis can be returned to Emotiva for factory installation of additional modules, bringing the configuration up to seven channels without replacing the unit. Every model in the XPA Gen3 range shares the same chassis and power supply architecture, with channel count and module type determining the final configuration.
Amplifier Topology
Each channel module uses a fully discrete, dual-differential, high-current Class A/B topology with a short signal path. The power supply operates on Emotiva's proprietary Optimized Soft-Switch Class H™ architecture, implemented via a high-efficiency switch mode power supply (SMPS). Class H differs from conventional Class A/B in its use of multiple supply voltage rails: the supply tracks the incoming audio signal and operates at a lower voltage during low-level passages to reduce quiescent dissipation, switching to a higher rail when a transient demands it. This dynamic supply tracking maintains the linearity of the Class A/B output stage while reducing idle power consumption relative to a fixed-rail design. Fault protection is handled by a dedicated microprocessor circuit that monitors each channel independently.
Inputs and Outputs
Each of the five channels provides both a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input, selectable independently per channel via a metal toggle switch. This arrangement allows mixed input configurations within a single installation — for example, balanced connections from a processor's front three outputs and unbalanced from the surround outputs. Speaker connections use audiophile-grade, gold-plated five-way binding posts with clear shields on all five channels, compatible with bare wire, spade lugs, and banana plugs. A remote trigger input (5–12V) and a 12VDC trigger output allow the XPA-5 Gen3 to integrate with and control other trigger-enabled equipment.
Performance
With all five channels driven simultaneously, the XPA-5 Gen3 delivers 250 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms (THD < 0.1%) and 380 watts RMS per channel into 4 ohms (THD < 0.1%). With two channels driven, output rises to 300 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms and 490 watts RMS per channel into 4 ohms. Power bandwidth at rated power spans 20Hz to 20kHz (±0.1dB), with broadband frequency response extending from 5Hz to 80kHz (+0/−2dB). Total harmonic distortion plus noise is specified at less than 0.005% at 100 watts RMS, 1kHz into 8 ohms. Signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 117dB referenced to FTC rated power (A-weighted, unbalanced input). Damping factor into 8 ohms exceeds 500. Input sensitivity for rated power is 1.5V, with an input impedance of 33k ohms balanced and 23.5k ohms unbalanced.
