The Emotiva XPA-DR3 is a three-channel power amplifier from Emotiva's Differential Reference series — the highest-performance amplifier family in the Emotiva lineup. It sits alongside the XPA-DR1 monoblock and the two-channel XPA-DR2, sharing the same Differential Reference module architecture but deploying three channels for front-stage home theatre or multi-channel music use. Each channel delivers 450 watts RMS into 8Ω and 600 watts RMS into 4Ω, all three channels driven simultaneously, at less than 0.1% THD.

Differential Reference Module Architecture

Each of the three channels is driven by its own Differential Reference amplifier module — a perfectly matched pair of high-performance amplifier circuits configured in a fully balanced, differential topology. A cross-linked current source feeds a balanced voltage amplification stage, which in turn drives a complementary, fully discrete Class A/B output stage. Running both amplifier circuits in differential mode means that residual nonlinearities from each half cancel at the output, yielding THD+Noise below 0.015% at 100W RMS (1kHz, 8Ω) and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 120dB referenced to rated power (unbalanced input, A-weighted). The output stage is fully floating and differential; neither speaker terminal may be tied to ground or to the other terminal without causing immediate damage.

Soft-Switch Class H Power Supply

The XPA-DR3 combines a fully analogue Class A/B output stage with Emotiva's Soft-Switch Class H power supply topology. At lower power levels, the output stage operates from a reduced supply voltage to minimise quiescent dissipation. When the signal demands greater headroom, the supply switches instantly to a higher voltage rail, delivering clean, unclipped output without the thermal compromise of a fixed high-voltage supply. The underlying power supply is a high-current switch-mode design (SMPS) capable of delivering over 3kW of continuous power across all three channels, with automatic voltage detection accepting mains from 100 to 250VAC at 50 or 60Hz. Maximum power consumption is rated at 2,300 watts.

Connectivity & Control

Each channel provides both a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input, selectable on a per-channel basis, with an input impedance of 33kΩ (balanced) or 23.5kΩ (unbalanced) and an input sensitivity of 2.0V for rated output into 8Ω. Speaker connections are made via gold-plated binding posts. The minimum recommended load is 4Ω per channel. A 12V trigger input (5–12V AC/DC, drawing less than 10mA) and a 12V DC trigger output (up to 120mA) allow integration with preamplifiers and AV processors for automated power sequencing.

Chassis & Performance

The XPA-DR3 is built into a heavy steel 4RU chassis with a milled aluminium faceplate. All three Differential Reference modules are factory-installed, fully populating the chassis. The amplifier achieves a damping factor exceeding 500 into an 8Ω load, with a voltage gain of 29dB and a broadband frequency response of 20Hz to 50kHz (+0/−2dB), tightening to ±0.1dB across the full 20Hz to 20kHz audio band at rated power. The amplifier is designed, assembled, and tested at Emotiva's facility in Franklin, Tennessee.
