Emotiva XPA-11 Gen3 Power Amplifier

The Emotiva XPA-11 Gen3 is the top-of-range eleven-channel model in Emotiva's third-generation XPA modular power amplifier platform. Sharing the same 4RU chassis as every other XPA Gen3 configuration, the XPA-11 Gen3 combines three high-powered single-channel (mono) modules with four two-channel (stereo) modules to deliver a total of eleven amplified channels — three operating at 300 watts RMS for front left, centre, and right loudspeaker duties, and eight operating at 65 watts RMS for surround, rear, and height channels. The platform supports channel counts from two upwards, with the XPA-5, XPA-7, and XPA-9 Gen3 sitting below the XPA-11 in the range.

Module Architecture

Each XPA Gen3 module is a fully discrete, dual differential, high-current, short-signal-path Class A/B amplifier circuit. Emotiva derives this topology from its XPR reference series, using a differential input stage with a cross-linked current source that drives a balanced voltage amplification stage, followed by a complementary, fully discrete output stage. The mono modules each deliver 300 watts RMS per channel into 8Ω or 550 watts RMS per channel into 4Ω (one channel driven). The stereo modules each provide 65 watts RMS per channel into 8Ω or 100 watts RMS per channel into 4Ω. All eleven channels share an identical gain of 29dB and a minimum recommended load of 4Ω.

Power Supply & Efficiency

The XPA-11 Gen3 is powered by a high-efficiency audiophile-grade switch-mode power supply (SMPS) rated at over 3kW continuous. All mono modules use Emotiva's Soft-Switch Optimised Class H power supply topology: at low power levels each channel operates from a relatively low supply voltage, then instantly and seamlessly switches to a higher voltage rail when a fast-rising signal demands it. This real-time rail switching delivers greater efficiency and cooler operation than a conventional fixed-rail Class A/B design, while leaving the Class A/B output stage itself entirely unchanged. The mains input accepts 100–250VAC at 50/60Hz with automatic detection, making the amplifier suitable for international use.

Connectivity & Control

Every channel provides independently selectable balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, switched via metal toggle switches on the rear panel. Input sensitivity is 0.8V for the mono modules and 1.5V for the stereo modules (both referenced to rated power into 8Ω). Input impedance is 33kΩ balanced and 23.5kΩ unbalanced. Speaker connections are via gold-plated five-way binding posts. A 5–12V AC/DC trigger input and a 12V trigger output (rated at 120mA) support automated power sequencing in a larger system. The front panel carries a standby button with a colour-changing halo ring and individual blue status LEDs for each channel, which switch to red to indicate a fault condition. Rear panel controls include an AC power switch, a status LED dimmer, and a resettable circuit breaker.

Protection & Construction

The XPA-11 Gen3 includes microprocessor-controlled fault protection monitoring for excessive operating temperature, shorted speaker connections, and ground faults. The chassis is a heavy steel 4RU enclosure with a milled aluminium faceplate. Input connectors are solid machined gold-plated RCA jacks. The unit weighs 24kg and occupies four rack units, with an overall depth of 483mm.
