Pro-Ject Audio Systems was founded by Heinz Lichtenegger, during a period when the compact disc had largely displaced vinyl as the dominant music format. Lichtenegger founded the company on the conviction that vinyl remained the most compelling way to experience music, and set out to make high-quality analogue playback equipment available at reasonable prices — rejecting unnecessary features in favour of practical, long-lasting performance.
Manufacturing takes place entirely in Europe: turntables are handcrafted in the Czech Republic from individual components, while miniaturised high-end audio electronics are produced in Slovakia. The company applies a four-step quality control process to all production. Pro-Ject has developed an extensive range of tonearms across 24 variants, alongside cartridges, phono stages, amplifiers, speakers, cables, and accessories, as well as distributing vinyl records.
Today Pro-Ject distributes its products to over 80 countries and has received multiple awards from respected audio publications. The brand maintains notable partnerships with Universal Music Group, Third Man Records, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, reflecting a broad commitment to the wider music and analogue audio community.
