The Pro-Ject 142g Counterweight (033) is a genuine replacement counterweight for Pro-Ject tonearms that use the 033 counterweight series. At 142g, this is a heavier-than-standard counterweight designed to balance the tonearm correctly when used with cartridges that require a lower cartridge mass to achieve the correct vertical tracking force (VTF) setting, or to extend the VTF range available when switching to certain moving-coil cartridges.
What a Counterweight Does
The counterweight sits at the rear of the tonearm tube, opposite the cartridge. By sliding the counterweight along the tube and rotating it, you set the downforce that the stylus exerts on the record groove. Setting the correct tracking force is essential: too little and the stylus will skip or mistracking the groove; too much and both the stylus and your records will suffer premature wear. Each Pro-Ject tonearm counterweight carries a numerical part code stamped into the body, which identifies the correct mass and thread specification for that tonearm family.
142g Weight and Tonearm Compatibility
The 033 series counterweight weighs 142g. This places it in the upper-medium weight range for Pro-Ject counterweights, making it suitable for use with cartridges that have a relatively light body mass or that require a higher VTF setting to be achieved with the counterweight positioned close to the bearing. The 033 designation refers to the thread specification and mount type, ensuring a secure fit on compatible tonearm rear stubs without play or vibration. If you are upgrading to a cartridge with different mass characteristics or if your existing counterweight has been lost or damaged, this is the correct replacement for 033-series tonearms.
Installation
Fitting the counterweight is straightforward. Thread the counterweight onto the rear stub of the tonearm by hand until it seats securely. With the cartridge and stylus guard fitted, balance the tonearm parallel to the platter surface by adjusting the counterweight position. Once balanced, set the tracking force dial to zero and then rotate the dial to your cartridge manufacturer-recommended VTF figure. Always re-check alignment and anti-skating settings whenever a counterweight is changed.
