The Ortofon 2MR Red is the entry-level model in the 2MR series, the low-profile range of moving magnet cartridges adapted from the popular 2M family for Rega-style tonearms. It uses the same engine and tipped elliptical stylus assembly found on the regular 2M Red, paired with the slimmer 2MR housing that requires no spacers or modifications when fitting to a low-form-factor tonearm.
Tipped Elliptical Stylus
The 2MR Red is fitted with a tipped elliptical diamond stylus mounted on an aluminium tube cantilever. The elliptical profile reads further into the groove than a basic spherical tip, recovering more high-frequency detail and tracking complex passages with greater stability. Ortofon recommends a tracking force of 1.8 g (range 1.6 to 2.0 g).
R-Mount Housing
The 2MR housing is a slimline body developed for tonearms with a low cartridge slot, such as those produced by Rega. Its 3 mm height reduction relative to the standard 2M body removes the need for spacers when fitting to a Rega-style arm, and the cartridge mounts using just two screws. Pairing across the 2M and 2MR ranges means the same stylus assemblies can be used on either body.
Engine and Output
The cartridge uses Ortofon's 2M motor system, with quad coils and split pole pins wound with OFC copper wire. Output voltage is 5.5 mV at 1 kHz / 5 cm/sec, sitting comfortably within the input range of any standard MM phono stage. Recommended load is 47 kOhm with 150 to 300 pF capacitance.
