The Ortofon 2MR Blue sits in the middle of the 2MR series, an R-mount adaptation of the long-running 2M moving magnet range. The R-mount housing is a slimmer, lower-profile body designed to drop straight onto Rega-style tonearms without spacers, and the 2MR Blue carries the engine and stylus assembly that has long defined the step-up choice in the wider 2M family.
R-Mount Housing
The 2MR housing has been specifically designed for turntables and tonearms with low-form-factor cartridge requirements, such as those produced by Rega. Its narrow body integrates without modifications or spacers beneath the tonearm, allowing fitment using just two screws. This makes installation noticeably simpler on Rega and similar arms compared to a standard half-inch mount.
Nude Elliptical Diamond
The 2MR Blue carries a nude elliptical diamond stylus on an aluminium cantilever. Mounting the diamond directly to the cantilever (rather than onto an intermediate metal shank) reduces tip mass and improves high-frequency tracing, the audible difference over the bonded elliptical tip used in the 2MR Red. Output voltage is 5.5 mV at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec, suitable for any standard MM phono input.
Tracking and Compatibility
Ortofon recommend a tracking force of 1.8 g, within a permissible range of 1.6 to 2.0 g. Dynamic lateral compliance is rated at 20 µm/mN, suiting the medium-mass tonearms typical of Rega and comparable decks. The cartridge presents a 47 kΩ load impedance and 150 to 300 pF capacitance to the phono stage, in line with the standard 2M series. The Blue stylus is user-replaceable and is upgrade-compatible with higher 2M styli should you wish to step up the range later.
