The Ortofon 2MR Black sits at the top of the 2MR series, bringing the flagship engine and Nude Shibata stylus of the regular 2M Black into the slim R-mount housing designed for Rega-style tonearms. It is the most resolving moving magnet cartridge Ortofon offer in this fitment, intended for owners of Rega and similar low-profile decks who want the same stylus and motor as the standalone 2M Black without spacers or modifications to the arm.
R-Mount Housing
The 2MR housing has been specifically designed for turntables and tonearms with low-form-factor cartridge requirements, such as those produced by Rega. Its narrow body integrates without modifications or spacers beneath the tonearm, allowing fitment using just two screws. Cartridge weight is reduced to 6 g compared with 7.2 g for the standard half-inch 2M Black.
Nude Shibata Stylus on Aluminium Cantilever
The 2MR Black carries forward the Nude Shibata diamond and aluminium cantilever used by the standalone 2M Black. The Shibata profile presents an exceptionally wide contact area to the groove walls, retrieving high-frequency information that simpler elliptical and conical profiles tend to miss. The result is a notably detailed and even reproduction across the entire spectrum.
Engine and Coils
The motor is the high-performance 2M quad-coil arrangement with split pole pins and silver-plated OFC coil wire. Output voltage is 5 mV at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec, suitable for any standard MM phono input. Internal impedance is 1.2 kOhm, internal inductance 630 mH, with a recommended load of 47 kOhm and 150 to 300 pF capacitance.
Tracking and Compatibility
Ortofon recommend a tracking force of 1.5 g, within a permissible range of 1.4 to 1.7 g. Dynamic lateral compliance is rated at 22 µm/mN, suiting the medium-mass tonearms typical of Rega and comparable decks. The 2MR Black is fully stylus-compatible with the rest of the 2M family, allowing later upgrade or substitution between profiles within the same housing.
