The Pro-Ject RPM 5 Carbon sits at the upper-mid tier of Pro-Ject's manual turntable range, drawing heavily on the engineering of its flagship RPM 9 Carbon. Where the entry-level Debut range focuses on accessible performance, the RPM 5 Carbon deploys a series of refinements — an inverted platter bearing, an outboard motor, an acrylic platter, and a dedicated carbon fibre tonearm — that together target the sources of noise and resonance that limit budget decks.
Chassis and Bearing
The low-resonance chassis is finished in high-gloss lacquer and supports a newly designed inverted platter bearing with a stainless steel axle and ceramic ball. The ceramic ball reduces friction and further lowers the noise floor compared to conventional steel-on-steel bearing designs. The 300mm platter is machined from acrylic, a material selected for its acoustic inertness — unlike MDF or metal platters, it does not ring sympathetically when energised by the stylus.
Motor and Speed Control
The synchronous AC motor is mounted outside the chassis in a separate housing, physically decoupling it from the plinth to prevent motor vibration from feeding into the record. Drive power is provided by an ultra-precision DC-driven AC generator, producing a clean sine wave at the motor rather than relying on mains frequency for speed reference. The result is speed drift figures of ±0.12% at 33rpm and ±0.10% at 45rpm, with wow and flutter of ±0.17% and ±0.08% respectively.
9" EVO Carbon Tonearm
The included 9" EVO tonearm features a one-piece carbon fibre tube, which combines high stiffness with low mass — effective arm mass is 8g and effective arm length 230mm with an overhang of 18mm. The counterweight is TPE-damped to absorb unwanted resonances that would otherwise feed back into the cartridge. The arm is compatible with any high-quality MM or MC cartridge and accepts tracking forces up to 25mN. A Connect it E semi-symmetrical, low-capacitance phono cable is supplied in the box.
Accessories and Setup
The RPM 5 Carbon ships with a screw-on record clamp, a 45rpm adapter for 7" singles, and a 15V DC power supply. Three adjustable aluminium tip-toe feet allow levelling on uneven surfaces. The lid is available as an optional add-on. The deck is also available with an Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge pre-fitted.
