Description

The KEF Q7 Meta is one of two floorstanding models in the eight-strong Q Series Meta range, sitting below the larger Q11 Meta and bringing acoustic technology derived from KEF's flagship Blade and The Reference loudspeakers into a more accessible package. It is built to work equally well as a high-fidelity stereo speaker and as the front pair of a multi-channel home cinema system, and is offered in Satin Black, Satin White and Walnut finishes.

Metamaterial Absorption Technology

The defining advancement in the Q Series Meta range is Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a joint development with the Acoustic Metamaterials Group. MAT is a highly complex maze-like structure in which each of the intricate channels efficiently absorbs a specific frequency. Combined, those channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound radiated from the rear of the tweeter and eliminating the distortion that would otherwise result, for a purer and more natural acoustic performance.

12th Generation Uni-Q Driver Array

The Q7 Meta uses KEF's 12th generation Uni-Q driver array, in which a 19 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter sits concentrically within a 100 mm aluminium midrange cone. Because both drive units radiate from a single point source, high and midrange frequencies reach the listener in step across a wide area of the room. The array has been redesigned around MAT: a conical waveguide couples the tweeter dome to the absorber, a re-engineered tweeter gap damper places two rings of porous material to tame resonances, and the tweeter rear chamber vent area has been increased by 250% so that more sound energy reaches the metamaterial absorber. A flexible decoupling chassis, derived from The Reference, keeps vibration from the midrange motor system out of the cabinet.

Three-Way Design and Bass Performance

The Q Series has been upgraded from a 2.5-way to a full three-way configuration, so the Uni-Q handles high and midrange frequencies while two dedicated 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers take care of the low end. Each bass driver is a hybrid structure with a shallow, concave aluminium skin atop a paper cone, giving the stiffness needed for piston-like movement, better punch and greater speed. A 3D FEA-optimised surround geometry improves linearity at higher excursions, and the flared port is modelled using computational fluid dynamics to minimise turbulence and reduce chuffing noise. The result is a frequency response of 46 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB), with typical in-room bass extension reaching 28 Hz (-6 dB).

Refined Crossover and Shadow Flare

The crossover was developed from more than 1,000 individual measurements taken with a custom-built reference microphone array in KEF's anechoic chamber in Maidstone, UK, giving a precise and seamless transition between the three driver sections at 440 Hz and 2.3 kHz. The cabinet also carries Shadow Flare, a precision-designed surface derived from the flagship models that extends the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q array. The tweeter no longer has a line of sight to the cabinet edges, which reduces unwanted diffraction and preserves fine detail.

Finish, Fittings and System Building

Colour-matched magnetic grilles are supplied with the speakers, along with a plinth, rubber feet and port bungs for tuning bass output to the room. An optional PQ1 Plinth Spike Kit is available separately. Within the Q Series Meta range the Q7 Meta partners naturally with the Q6 Meta three-way centre speaker, the Q8 Meta surround and Dolby Atmos speaker, and the slender on-wall Q4 Meta, allowing a complete home cinema system to be built around a matched Uni-Q voicing.
