The KEF Q7 Meta is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker in the Q Series Meta range, sitting at the top of KEF's accessible HiFi lineup and bringing technologies derived directly from the company's reference-grade Blade and LS50 Meta speakers. It is designed to perform equally at home as a high-fidelity stereo speaker and as the foundation of a multi-channel home cinema system, and is offered in Satin Black, Satin White, and Walnut finishes.
Metamaterial Absorption Technology
The defining innovation in the Q Series Meta range is the integration of Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), developed in collaboration with Acoustic Metamaterials Group. MAT is a precisely engineered maze-like structure placed behind the tweeter dome. Each of its intricate channels is tuned to absorb a specific frequency, collectively acting as an acoustic black hole that eliminates 99% of the unwanted sound radiated from the rear of the tweeter. The result is a significant reduction in high-frequency distortion, producing a cleaner, more natural acoustic performance.
12th Generation Uni-Q Driver Array
The Q7 Meta uses KEF's latest 12th generation Uni-Q driver array, in which a 19 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter is mounted concentrically within a 100 mm aluminium midrange cone. This coaxial arrangement places both drive units at a single acoustic point, ensuring that high and midrange frequencies radiate from the same source across a wide listening area, delivering a more spacious and precise soundstage. The tweeter motor system has been redesigned to increase the rear chamber vent area by 250%, transmitting more sound energy to the MAT absorber and allowing the tweeter to operate with lower distortion at all frequencies.
Three-Way Design and Bass Performance
The Q7 Meta uses a three-way configuration, with two dedicated 165 mm (6.5 in.) hybrid aluminium bass drivers handling low frequencies independently of the Uni-Q. Each bass driver uses a shallow, concave aluminium skin bonded to a paper cone, combining stiffness with light weight for a piston-like movement. A 3D FEA-optimised surround geometry improves linearity at higher excursions, and a flared port modelled with computational fluid dynamics minimises turbulence for tighter, more controlled bass output. The result is a frequency response of 46 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB), with in-room bass extension reaching 28 Hz (-6 dB).
Refined Crossover and Shadow Flare
The crossover network was developed using more than 1,000 individual measurements taken in KEF's anechoic chamber in Maidstone, UK, ensuring a precise and seamless transition between all three driver sections at 440 Hz and 2.3 kHz. The cabinet also incorporates Shadow Flare, a precision-engineered surface that extends the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q array and minimises diffraction from the cabinet edges, preserving fine detail and subtle nuances in the reproduced sound.
Design and System Compatibility
The Q7 Meta pairs naturally with other speakers in the Q Series Meta range, including the Q6 Meta centre speaker, the Q8 Meta and Q4 Meta surround options, and KEF subwoofers, enabling a versatile home cinema configuration. Colour-matched magnetic grilles are included with each pair. An optional PQ1 Plinth Spike Kit is available separately for enhanced stability and isolation.
