The AudioQuest Pearl is the entry-level model in AudioQuest's optical digital cable range, designed to carry digital audio signals between a source component and a DAC, soundbar, AV receiver, or other optical-input device. It sits below the Forest, Cinnamon, Carbon, and Vodka in the AudioQuest optical hierarchy, offering a meaningful step up from generic optical cables through the use of a specifically selected low-dispersion fibre conductor.
Low-Dispersion Fibre
The Pearl's core technology is its low-dispersion optical fibre. In a standard optical cable, light signals can bounce off the interior walls of the fibre strand, causing some photons to travel a longer path and arrive at the destination fractionally later than others. This dispersion effect introduces timing errors in the digital stream, increasing jitter and reducing the bandwidth available for accurate decoding. The Pearl addresses this with a fibre optimised to minimise such dispersion, allowing light to travel through with greater consistency and lower jitter.
Polished Optical Interface
The connectors on the Pearl feature a finely polished optical interface. A smooth, clean optical surface at the point where the fibre meets the TOSLINK connector body reduces light scattering at the transition, contributing to more efficient and consistent signal transfer. The connectors are sized to fit the standard TOSLINK socket found on the vast majority of consumer audio and AV equipment.
Applications
The Pearl Optical is well suited to connecting a television or set-top box to a soundbar or AV receiver, linking a games console or Blu-ray player to a DAC, or any other application calling for a standard TOSLINK optical connection. The 3m length provides flexibility for routing behind furniture or across a room.
