The AE120² is the flagship of Acoustic Energy's 100 Series and the only true 3-way design in the range. Where the smaller AE109² uses a 2.5-way crossover to split duties between its twin drivers, the AE120² goes a decisive step further — dedicating a midrange driver to its own sealed internal enclosure, flanked by twin bass units below and a tweeter above. The result is a speaker with noticeably greater vocal clarity, midrange resolution, and full-scale dynamic capability, all from a cabinet that remains slim enough to live comfortably in a typical living room.

True 3-Way Architecture

The advantage of a genuine 3-way design at this price point is significant. By giving the midrange driver its own isolated sub-enclosure, Acoustic Energy eliminates the harmful effects of rear wave reflections from the bass drivers contaminating the vocal range. Each of the three 130mm paper cone drivers — built around the same ultra-high force, long-throw motor system used across the 100 Series — operates within a more comfortable bandwidth, meaning less stress on individual drivers and a more composed, refined presentation overall. The impedance-compensated 3-way crossover avoids the resonance issues that would otherwise slow bass delivery and colour the midrange, keeping the critical crossover points well away from the most sensitive vocal frequencies.

Deep, Controlled Bass

The twin bass drivers deliver genuine low-frequency extension down to 39Hz — enough to handle full orchestral scores, electronic music, and movie soundtracks without needing a subwoofer in most rooms. A rear-mounted slot port augments the bass with smooth extension and minimal room interaction, while the impedance-compensated crossover ensures the low end remains fast and tuneful rather than slow and bloated. Inert mass-loading within the cabinet adds stability and further damps vibration, contributing to a tight, composed bass performance even at high volumes.

Wide Dispersion Tweeter

Acoustic Energy's 25mm soft dome tweeter sits within the company's Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide, delivering controlled, high-sensitivity treble with low distortion across a broad listening area. Whether you're sitting dead centre or off to one side, the top end remains smooth, detailed, and naturally integrated with the midrange below.

The AE120² is housed in a substantial cabinet with carefully tuned internal bracing and inert mass-loading for stability and acoustic damping. A discreet satin black plinth is included to aid placement and further improve dynamic performance. Slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles complete the clean, modern aesthetic.
