The Acoustic Energy AE309² is the flagship floor-standing loudspeaker in the second-generation AE300 Series — a range that sits below the reference-grade AE500 Series in Acoustic Energy’s hierarchy but inherits several of its engineering advances. Designed for medium to large rooms, the AE309² combines a slim-line enclosure with a 2.5-way driver configuration to deliver room-filling authority without dominating the listening space.
Driver Technology
At the heart of the AE309² are two 120 mm mid/bass drivers built from a blend of paper and coconut fibre — a composite developed through Acoustic Energy’s Corinium research project. This combination delivers a smooth, natural midrange with controlled bass extension. An extended copper pole shield reduces midrange distortion, while a non-conducting voice coil former enhances bass response and dynamic range.
High frequencies are handled by a 29 mm fabric-dome tweeter, offering speed, clarity and low distortion across the upper registers. The 2.5-way crossover network, with transition points at 285 Hz and 3.8 kHz, has been designed to minimise phase distortion and ensure seamless integration between the drivers.
Cabinet Construction
The enclosure is constructed from 18 mm constrained-layer RSC™ (Resonance Suppression Composite) MDF bonded with bitumen damping — a technology carried over from the AE500 Series that significantly reduces cabinet radiation for cleaner sound reproduction. A rear-mounted slot-shaped duct port augments bass output and has been carefully tuned to reduce air turbulence, resulting in tight, undistorted low-frequency performance.
Aluminium feet with spike covers and M8-threaded spikes provide secure floor coupling while protecting surfaces. The cabinet is available in Walnut veneer or Acoustic Energy’s silk-touch matte finish in Black or White, with colour-matched trims and grilles for a cohesive appearance.
Performance
With a frequency response spanning 33 Hz to 29 kHz (±6 dB), the AE309² delivers deep, controlled bass alongside articulate midrange detail and airy treble extension. Sensitivity is rated at 89 dB with a peak SPL capability of 112 dB, giving the speaker ample headroom for dynamic orchestral passages and punchy rhythmic material alike. The 6-ohm nominal impedance and 120 W power handling make it an easy match for a wide range of integrated and power amplifiers.
What the Press Says
- “It is a genuine pleasure in the way that an Acoustic Energy should be and it shows a company pushing forward all the time without losing the things that made it great in the first place.” — AVForums 9/10 (May 2025)
