The Corinium is Acoustic Energy’s flagship floorstanding loudspeaker, sitting above the 500 Series as the culmination of three years of in-house development at the company’s Cirencester headquarters. Named after the Roman town that once occupied the site of modern-day Cirencester, the Corinium represents a ground-up redesign encompassing new driver technology, a patented crossover architecture, and a curved RSC cabinet that sets it apart from anything Acoustic Energy has produced before.

Driver Technology

The Corinium is a three-way design employing a 29mm soft dome tweeter paired with a dedicated 120mm carbon fibre midrange driver and two 140mm carbon fibre bass drivers. The tweeter uses a newly developed dome material that is lighter than the carbon fibre used in Acoustic Energy’s other ranges, chosen specifically to lower colouration and improve the reproduction of high-speed transients. The result is greater detail retrieval in the upper registers without the harshness that can accompany lighter dome materials.

The midrange driver is the acoustic centrepiece of the design, covering five octaves of the frequency range. Its carbon fibre cone and surround are optimised for the vocal spectrum, delivering what Acoustic Energy describes as a natural, revealing tonal quality. The bass section uses a pair of 140mm carbon fibre drivers built around an ultra-rigid version of the cone developed for the 500 Series. Each bass driver is driven by a long-throw voice coil sitting in a low-hysteresis motor structure, producing controlled, powerful bass from a cabinet that remains relatively compact for a speaker of this capability.

Crossover Design

The three-way crossover operates at 260 Hz and 3400 Hz, splitting the audio spectrum to allow each driver to work within its optimal range. Acoustic Energy has used premium passive components throughout: air-core inductors, metallised polypropylene film capacitors, and metal oxide resistors. The internal wiring features a patented arrangement of conductors designed to preserve musical detail and dynamic expression across the full bandwidth.

Cabinet Construction

The Corinium’s enclosure uses Acoustic Energy’s hybrid Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) system, combining wood panels of varying thickness — from 22mm at the thinnest point to 50mm at the thickest — with a 6mm ultra-rigid aluminium front baffle. The aluminium baffle serves a dual purpose: it provides an inert, vibration-free mounting surface for the drivers and isolates cabinet resonances from the driver assembly. The cabinet incorporates a 4-degree forward tilt to improve time alignment between the drivers and the listening position. The curved profile is not merely aesthetic; it reduces internal standing waves and contributes to the cabinet’s overall rigidity.

Setup and Connectivity

Connections are made via single-wired 4mm banana sockets or 9mm spade connectors. Acoustic Energy recommends a minimum amplifier power of 100 W into 8 ohms, with the amplifier ideally capable of doubling its output into the 4-ohm load presented by the Corinium. Supplied spikes thread at M10 × 1.5 and floor protectors are included for hard surfaces. Optimal placement is 45–60 cm from the rear wall with at least 1 metre to side walls.
