T+A Caruso R Multi-Source Receiver

The T+A Caruso R sits within the Caruso series from T+A elektroakustik, a German manufacturer based in Herford with a heritage in precision audio engineering. Where the original Caruso gained cult status from 2008 as a self-contained all-in-one system with integrated speakers, the Caruso R strips back to the receiver role — retaining all the same source capabilities and amplification but outputting to external loudspeakers. This positions the Caruso R as the core of a flexible two-channel system, pairable with anything from compact standmount speakers to full-size floorstanders.

Amplification

The Caruso R delivers 2 × 100W into 4 ohms (2 × 50W into 8 ohms), with peak output reaching 2 × 150W at 4 ohms. The output stages are DSP-controlled, linearising and optimising the frequency response while maintaining stability under load. T+A state the power supply has very high current reserves and never collapses, enabling distortion-free performance even at extreme volume levels. Total harmonic distortion is rated below 0.02%.

Sources and Streaming

The Caruso R integrates a slot-loading CD player supporting CD-DA, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and WMA formats. Its SC 100 streaming client provides access to Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music (via Alexa), Qobuz and Spotify Connect, alongside DLNA network playback of MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, WAV and ALAC files. AirPlay 2 is built in for direct streaming from Apple devices, and Bluetooth connectivity supports aptX, MP3, AAC and SBC codecs with bidirectional sink and source capability.

An FM tuner covers 87.5–108 MHz with 1 µV sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 65 dBA. The DAB+ tuner operates across Band III (168–240 MHz) with 2.0 µV sensitivity and signal-to-noise exceeding 96 dBA. Internet radio is provided through the Airable service, offering access to over 11,000 stations worldwide.

Connectivity

Analogue inputs comprise two AUX connections on RCA. Digital inputs include one USB 2.0 in master mode, one S/PDIF coaxial input supporting up to 192 kHz sample rates, and one TOS-Link optical input supporting up to 96 kHz. Two LAN ports are provided — one uplink and one output — alongside 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Outputs include a pre-amplifier output on RCA, a dedicated subwoofer output on RCA, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack rated at 32 ohms and 30 mW.

Interface and Control

A 7-inch HD touchscreen running T+A’s NavigatorOS provides the primary control interface, designed to minimise the number of individual operations required to reach any function. The display renders album artwork via Gracenote Music ID and provides tone management controls for bass, mid-range, treble and loudness. The Caruso R is also controllable through the T+A Navigator app for iOS and Android, and ships with an FM Caruso remote handset.

Construction

The chassis is built around T+A’s Aluminium Framework — a CNC-machined profile extrusion manufactured to ultra-close tolerances that serves as the principal load-bearing structure. The result is a case that is physically rigid and devoid of resonances. Dimensions are a compact 21 × 29 × 29 cm at a weight of 7.5 kg. Designed and engineered in Germany.
