Solid Steel S5-4 Hi-Fi Rack (Black)

The Solid Steel S5-4 is a four-shelf hi-fi rack from the Italian manufacturer's S5 Advanced series, sitting between the three-shelf S5-3 and five-shelf S5-5 in the range. Designed and manufactured in Italy since 1990, Solid Steel racks are built around a philosophy of vibration control through material science and mechanical decoupling, and the S5 series represents the pinnacle of that approach.

Twin-Shelf Decoupling System

The defining feature of the S5 series is its twin-shelf construction. Each shelf level consists of two layers: a structural shelf and a secondary shelf supported by precision steel cones. This creates a mechanical decoupling effect that isolates each component from both airborne and structure-borne vibrations. The secondary shelves feature perforated central areas with embedded steel reinforcement, combining rigidity with resonance dissipation.

Construction and Materials

The frame uses aluminium support tubes filled with StratoCell sound-absorbing foam, a non-grainy damping material that eliminates internal resonances within the tube structure. Stainless steel is used throughout for the upper and lower terminations, adjustable spikes, protective floor discs, cones, and fixings. The shelves themselves are polymer-laminated MDF, chosen for its consistent density and damping characteristics. ABS plastic protective discs on every shelf prevent direct metal-to-shelf contact.

Adjustability and Expansion

The S5-4 is a modular design. The aluminium support tubes incorporate a secure fastening system that allows precise height adjustment between shelves. The three inter-shelf spaces are configured at 305mm, 205mm, and 205mm from top to bottom, providing a taller top bay suitable for larger amplifiers or turntables. Additional shelf kits are available separately, allowing the rack to be expanded as a system grows. When placed on the included stainless steel floor discs (S Series PADS), the adjustable spikes effectively channel accumulated vibrations to the ground.

Practical Details

Each shelf supports a maximum load of 55 kg, giving a total system capacity well in excess of any realistic hi-fi setup. The rack weighs 37 kg assembled, with overall dimensions of 584 x 1010 x 430 mm (W x H x D). Usable shelf space measures 450 x 405 mm, comfortably accommodating full-width hi-fi separates. The S5-4 is available in Black and White finishes.
