Solid Steel S4-4 Hi-Fi Rack (Black)

The Solid Steel S4-4 is a four-shelf wide-format hi-fi and AV rack from the Italian manufacturer's S4 series. Positioned as the widest option in Solid Steel's regular range, the S4 series draws on the refined styling of the discontinued 7 Series while incorporating the construction techniques proven in the S3 and S5 lines. The S4-4 offers the most shelf space in the series, sitting above the two-shelf S4-2 and three-shelf S4-3.

Construction

The frame uses painted aluminium tubes filled with StratoCell sound-absorbing foam, a construction approach shared across Solid Steel's current range. This foam-filled tube design addresses the vibration transfer that hollow metal frames would otherwise introduce into sensitive hi-fi components. The hardware — upper terminations, bottom terminations, regulable spikes, and protective floor discs — is machined from stainless steel. The base terminations use iron treated with zinc to prevent rust, while the adjustable spikes allow levelling on uneven floors.

Shelves

Each shelf is constructed from MDF with a polymer laminate finish. The four shelves provide inner heights of 245 mm (bottom), 225 mm (middle), and 225 mm (top), accommodating standard-height hi-fi separates and AV components across all three open tiers. Each shelf is rated to a maximum load of 110 kg, giving the rack a total capacity well in excess of any realistic equipment combination. At 500 mm wide per section (two sections per shelf), the S4 series offers a noticeably wider platform than the narrower S3 range, making it particularly suited to wider AV receivers and power amplifiers.

Design

The S4 series is manufactured in Italy, where Solid Steel has been producing audio furniture since 1990. The design balances functional efficiency with visual restraint — the clean lines and consistent black finish allow the rack to recede behind the equipment it supports rather than competing for attention.
