The Concept 90 is the dedicated centre channel speaker in Q Acoustics' Concept series, sitting alongside the Concept 30 bookshelf and Concept 50 floorstanding models to form a complete home cinema system. Designed to anchor dialogue with clarity and precision, the Concept 90 brings the same engineering principles that define the Concept range — Gelcore™ cabinet construction, an isolation suspension base, and ground-up driver design — to a horizontal centre channel format.
Gelcore™ Cabinet Construction
The Concept 90 uses Q Acoustics' proprietary Gelcore™ cabinet technology to minimise high-frequency cabinet noise. The cabinet walls are formed from two separate layers bonded together with a flexible gel compound. This constrained-layer damping approach converts cabinet vibration energy into heat, significantly reducing the resonances that colour the sound in conventional single-skin enclosures.
Isolation Suspension Base
Rather than coupling the cabinet directly to the surface it sits on, the Concept 90 mounts on an isolation suspension base that decouples the speaker from external vibrations and prevents internally generated energy from transmitting into the supporting furniture. The crossover network is also mounted on this isolation base to minimise microphonic pickup from the crossover components themselves.
Driver Design
The Concept 90 is fitted with two 125mm (5.0″) mid/bass drivers and a single 25mm (1.0″) tweeter. Both driver types were designed from the ground up for the Concept series, with increased power handling over previous Q Acoustics designs. The tweeter is hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated — effectively floating within the front baffle — to prevent cabinet-borne vibrations from reaching the high-frequency diaphragm. The entire driver assembly is mounted to the front aluminium baffle via pretensioned studs, ensuring a consistent and rigid mechanical connection.
Performance
With a sensitivity of 90 dB (2.83V @ 1m) and a nominal impedance of 6Ω, the Concept 90 is straightforward to drive from a wide range of AV amplifiers and receivers. Q Acoustics recommend amplifier power between 25W and 150W. The frequency response extends from 67 Hz to 30 kHz (−6 dB), with distortion below 0.2% across the 120 Hz – 20 kHz band at 2.83 Vrms. The crossover point is set at 2.1 kHz.
In the Box
Each Concept 90 is supplied with a magnetic speaker grille, two foam port bungs for bass tuning, and an owner’s manual.
