The Pro-Ject T2 Super Black occupies a compelling position in Pro-Ject's T-series turntable lineup, sitting above the entry-level T1 and delivering a notable step up in audiophile specification. Where the T1 establishes the blueprint, the T2 Super adds a built-in phono stage, an improved tonearm with spring-based anti-skating, and a premium cartridge, making it a genuinely self-contained vinyl playback solution for those building their first serious system or seeking a clean, all-in-one source component.
Built-In Dual-Stage Phono Preamp
One of the T2 Super's most significant features is its dual-stage split-passive MM phono preamplifier, a design first seen in Pro-Ject's T2 W and refined here with the additional PCB space the T2 Super Phono chassis allows. The result is a phono stage with an exceptionally low noise floor, making it well suited to pairing directly with an integrated amplifier that lacks its own phono input. Should you later wish to upgrade to a dedicated external phono stage or experiment with MC cartridges, the built-in stage can be switched off entirely.
Sumiko Rainier Cartridge
The T2 Super Black ships with a Sumiko Rainier moving-magnet cartridge, a hand-crafted Japanese unit selected for its ability to precisely locate instruments and vocals in the stereo image. It partners neatly with the 9-inch aluminium tonearm, which features an adjustable spring-based anti-skating mechanism to ensure consistent stylus tracking across the record.
Belt-Drive Precision
Drive is via a precision belt, with electronic speed change between 33 and 45 RPM managed by a dedicated speed switch on the plinth. The 10mm thick, 1.7kg glass platter provides both the mass and damping needed for stable playback, supported by a stainless steel and brass main bearing. Speed variance is tightly controlled at 0.6% at 33 RPM and 0.5% at 45 RPM, with wow and flutter figures of 0.19% and 0.17% respectively.
High Gloss Black Finish
The T2 Super Black is finished in a deep, piano-lacquer High Gloss Black that suits both contemporary and classic hi-fi setups. The compact footprint, at 465mm wide by 347mm deep with the dust cover closed, means it sits comfortably on most hi-fi furniture without dominating the shelf.
Handmade in Europe
Pro-Ject has manufactured turntables by hand in Europe since 1991, and the T2 Super continues that tradition. Every unit is assembled in the company's Czech Republic factory, with a focus on longevity and sustainability that is reflected in the quality of materials and the repairability of the design.
