The Sweep it S2 is Pro-Ject's premium magnetically stabilised record broom, designed to clean vinyl records continuously during playback. It sits in one of two left-hand corners of your turntable, with the brush aligned to the record groove so that dust and static charge are swept away from the stylus path as the record revolves.
The Skating Problem
Record brooms have existed since the early 1970s, but conventional designs share a common flaw: as the brush presses against the rotating surface, it tends to skate inwards towards the centre of the platter, throwing the arm out of alignment with the tonearm and creating uneven pressure. The Sweep it S2 addresses this directly through a patented magnetic stabilisation system developed in collaboration with Klaus Mick, drawing on extensive theoretical and empirical research.
Magnetic Stabilisation
A powerful neodymium magnet (Nd2Fe14B) is housed in the top section of the vertical column. This interacts magnetically with an iron core and counterweight set into the brusharm itself. The aluminium body of the arm acts as a paramagnetic spacer between the two, and the geometry of this arrangement is carefully calculated to produce a specific stabilising force. The result is a record broom that maintains correct alignment throughout the record's playing surface, eliminating the skating tendency that affects simpler designs.
Construction and Adjustment
The arm is machined from aluminium and the base is finished in a matte black metal. The column height is adjustable within a range of approximately 1 cm, secured by a set screw in the base, allowing the arm to be aligned horizontally with the platter surface of different turntable models. A correct horizontal alignment ensures the recommended tracking force of approximately 6 g from the brush onto the record surface.
Brush Material
The brush itself is made from natural hair, chosen for its extremely low electronegativity. This property is important because a brush with high electronegativity would itself generate static charge on the record surface as it moves, defeating the purpose of cleaning. The natural hair construction ensures the brush draws dust into its fibres and discharges static without introducing new charge.
Placement and Compatibility
The Sweep it S2 can be positioned in either of two left-hand corner positions on the turntable plinth. At the optimal position, the brush tip should align with the spindle when the arm is at its furthest extent. The magnetic stabilisation design comfortably compensates for positioning deviations of between 1.5 and 2 cm relative to the spindle, accommodating a wide range of turntable shapes and sizes. The Sweep it S2 is available in Black and Silver metal finishes.
