Design and Construction
The sub-platter is machined from aluminium to higher tolerances than the standard plastic component it replaces. The machining process, often described as diamond-cut, allows far tighter dimensional accuracy than injection-moulded plastic. A stainless steel spindle is integrated into the assembly, contributing additional rigidity to the bearing interface. The total weight of the upgrade is 700 g, a substantial increase over the stock sub-platter.
Performance Benefits
The additional mass adds rotational inertia to the platter and drive system, providing greater resistance to short-term speed fluctuations caused by cartridge drag and belt irregularity. Pro-Ject describes this as an improvement in Wow and Flutter.
