Description
The Pro-Ject Clamp It sits at the top of Pro-Ject's turntable accessories range, offering a more sophisticated approach to record coupling than a conventional puck or weight. It fits within a family of accessories designed to extract greater performance from any Pro-Ject turntable, sitting alongside the Acryl It platter upgrade and the Brush It record cleaning brush.
The Problem with Record Weights
Standard record pucks rely on mass to press the vinyl against the platter. This approach has two recognised drawbacks: the additional weight increases the load on the main bearing, which can raise rumble levels on turntables with lighter bearing assemblies; and the concentrated mass at the centre label area can cause the record to arch slightly, lifting the outer groove area away from the platter surface rather than pulling it down towards it.
How the Clamp It Works
The Clamp It uses a mechanical clamping action around the centre spindle rather than gravity. A threaded collet grips the spindle, drawing the record and platter together across the full disc surface rather than at a single central point. Because no significant mass is added to the rotating assembly, the bearing load remains unchanged and rumble is not affected. The clamping pressure can be adjusted by rotating the upper section, allowing the user to set the tightening force according to the condition of the record, including gently warped pressings.
Construction
The Clamp It is machined from aluminium throughout, with a leather pad on the top face that contacts the record label area. The outer body features a distinctive diamond-cut finish, produced by a multi-axis CNC machining process that creates a faceted, jewel-like pattern across the cylindrical surface. The polished aluminium flange beneath the body sits on the record surface and distributes clamping load evenly. Pro-Ject describe it as a full metal accessory with leather coating.
Compatibility
The Clamp It is compatible with any turntable that uses a standard centre spindle and does not have a fixed dust cover or tonearm geometry that prevents access to the spindle while a record is playing. It is designed to complement Pro-Ject turntables but will work with any compatible deck from other manufacturers.
