The Pro-Ject Align it DS3 is a precision cartridge alignment protractor from Pro-Ject Audio Systems, designed to make setting up a phono cartridge straightforward and repeatable. It sits in the accessories range alongside other setup tools and sits above simpler two-point protractors, offering a full arc-tracing design that eliminates the need to spin the platter between null-point measurements.
Design and Construction
The protractor is machined from 2 mm acrylic and is disc-shaped to match the footprint of a vinyl record. Unlike conventional two-point alignment tools, the Align it DS3 traces the complete arc of the tonearm from the outer to the inner null-point on a single printed template. This means the protractor stays fixed in position during the alignment process, making it easier to use for beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike.
Alignment Geometries
Three of the most widely used alignment geometries are printed on the disc, each offering different optimisation priorities:
- Baerwald — an all-round geometry that minimises tracking error across the full playing surface and is a popular starting point for most listeners.
- Löfgren B — optimises tracking performance in the middle portion of a record, resulting in the lowest average distortion across a typical LP side.
- Stevenson — prioritises the inner grooves and the very start of the record, making it well suited to classical recordings and 45 RPM singles.
Alignment curves are provided for 8.6 inch, 9 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch tonearms, covering the full range of Pro-Ject tonearm lengths as well as many third-party tonearms with compatible pivot-to-spindle distances.
Adjustments Covered
The Align it DS3 allows adjustment of overhang, azimuth and tangentiality in a single session. Printed instructions on the reverse of the disc walk through each step clearly, and the included documentation provides background on each geometry to help the user choose the approach best suited to their listening habits.
