The Pro-Ject 78 RPM Pulley Set is a replacement accessory that allows compatible older Pro-Ject turntables to play 78 RPM shellac records. The set consists of a new drive pulley and a matching drive belt sized for 78 RPM playback. When fitted in place of the standard drive pulley, the turntable gains the ability to play at 78 RPM in addition to 33 RPM, though 45 RPM playback is not available with the 78 RPM pulley installed. The exchange can be reversed easily, allowing the owner to switch back to standard 33/45 RPM operation when required.
Compatibility
This pulley set is designed for older Pro-Ject turntables that use either a direct 230V or 110V mains power connection or a 16V AC power supply. It is not compatible with current Pro-Ject turntables that feature built-in electronic speed control technology and a 15V DC power supply. A full compatibility list is available in the Downloads section of the product page on the Pro-Ject website. Please check the compatibility list before purchasing to confirm that this set is suitable for your turntable model.
78 RPM Playback
Playing 78 RPM records correctly requires both the correct speed and a dedicated 78 RPM stylus. The groove on shellac 78 RPM records is considerably wider than that on modern microgroove vinyl, so a standard 33/45 RPM stylus will not track correctly and will be damaged by repeated playback at 78 RPM. A dedicated 78 RPM stylus, such as the Ortofon OM 78 or 2M 78, is required alongside this pulley set for proper playback.
