The Ortofon 2M Black Verso is the inverted-mount version of Ortofon's 2M Black flagship moving magnet cartridge, supplied premounted to a Verso headshell for tonearms that mount the cartridge from below. Within the 2M Verso line, it sits at the top alongside the Bronze, with the Red and Blue covering entry and mid tiers and the LVB 250 reserved for the limited 250th anniversary special.
Inverted Body
Verso models share the same generator, magnetics and stylus assemblies as the standard upright 2M cartridges, but the body is rotated so the mounting threads sit underneath. This allows the cartridge to be fitted to tonearms and headshells whose mounting plate is below the cartridge, rather than above. The headshell itself is included as a premounted unit, ready to fit to the tonearm.
Shibata Stylus
The 2M Black is graced with a nude Shibata diamond mounted on an aluminium tube cantilever. The slim, highly polished Shibata profile presents a wide contact area to the groove walls and is intended to retrieve detail across the spectrum, including the highest frequency groove information.
Split Pole Pin Engine
The 2M Black uses Ortofon's split pole pin generator with silver-plated copper wire in the coils. Output voltage is 5 mV at 1 kHz, channel separation 26 dB at 1 kHz and frequency response 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +2 / -0 dB. Internal impedance is 1.2 kOhm with 630 mH inductance, into a recommended 47 kOhm load with 150 to 300 pF capacitance.
Tracking and Mounting
Recommended tracking force is 1.5 g (range 1.4 to 1.7 g), with a 20 degree tracking angle and 22 micrometre per millinewton dynamic compliance. The premounted Verso assembly weighs 16.7 g; the cartridge alone is 7.2 g. The headshell uses Ortofon's standard half-inch pattern.
