4K UHD DLP Projector for Gaming and Home Cinema
The Optoma UHD42 delivers a true 4K Ultra HD image using a 0.47-inch DLP chip with four-phase pixel shifting, producing 8.3 million on-screen pixels — four times the detail of Full HD. With 3,400 lumens of brightness, it performs confidently in a variety of ambient light conditions, making it as at home in a living room as in a dedicated AV suite.
The single-chip DLP design uses a light-reflecting approach rather than a transmissive one, which yields deep, controlled blacks. What Hi-Fi? noted the UHD42 delivers “argually the best black depth in its class” — a characteristic advantage of DLP over competing 3LCD technology at this price point. Dynamic Black processing continuously adjusts exposure in real time to maintain punch and contrast as scenes change.
Gaming Performance
For gamers, the UHD42 is equipped with a dedicated Enhanced Gaming mode that reduces input lag to 15.7ms — a meaningful figure for fast-paced play. The HDMI 2.0 input supports frame rates up to 240Hz at Full HD, enabling ultra-smooth, judder-free motion for gaming or fast-action content. The combination of low input lag and high refresh rate places the UHD42 among the more capable gaming projectors at its price.
Installation and Connectivity
A throw ratio of 1.21–1.59 offers reasonable placement flexibility. Vertical lens shift (up to 10%) and keystone correction allow fine-tuning of image position without physically repositioning the projector. The 1.3× zoom range provides additional sizing flexibility. Focus and zoom are manual adjustments made directly on the unit.
Connectivity includes two HDMI inputs: the primary port is HDMI 2.0 (4K at 60Hz, Full HD at up to 240Hz), and the secondary is HDMI 1.4. A 5V/1.5A USB port can power an HDMI streaming dongle such as a Chromecast or Fire TV Stick. Audio outputs include a 3.5mm headphone/analogue out and an optical digital output for connection to an external sound system, alongside the built-in 10W speaker. The UHD42 has no built-in Wi-Fi or smart platform.
HDR, 3D, and Colour
The UHD42 supports both HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR standards, and is capable of displaying full 3D content from Blu-ray 3D players, 3D broadcasts, and compatible games consoles. Colour reproduction targets the Rec.709 HDTV colour gamut for accurate cinematic reproduction, with a more saturated mode available for gaming and animation. The CTA-certified True 4K UHD designation confirms the projector meets the Consumer Technology Association standard for genuine 4K pixel output.
