Optoma HZ40 Laser Projector

The Optoma HZ40 is a compact 1080p laser projector from Optoma's home entertainment range, positioned as a high-brightness option for living rooms and dedicated cinema spaces alike. With 4,000 lumens of laser-driven output, it is designed for lights-on viewing — a significant advantage for sports fans and gamers who want to use a projector without blacking out the room.

Laser Light Source

The HZ40 uses a laser phosphor light engine rather than a traditional lamp, delivering a claimed lifespan of over 30,000 hours. In practical terms, this eliminates lamp replacements entirely for most users and provides instant on/off capability with no warm-up or cool-down period. Laser illumination also maintains consistent brightness over time, avoiding the gradual dimming characteristic of conventional projector lamps.

Display Technology

At its core is a Texas Instruments single-chip DLP optical engine producing a native 1,920 x 1,080 (Full HD) image. The projector supports HDR10 and HLG metadata, extracting additional detail from HDR-mastered content by mapping the expanded dynamic range to its output capabilities. Optoma claims a contrast ratio of 2,500,000:1, and the projector is also capable of displaying full 3D content via DLP Link.

Gaming Performance

The HZ40 accepts a 1080p signal at 120Hz and delivers a measured input lag of just 8.4ms, making it a strong choice for console and PC gaming where rapid response times are critical. A dedicated Game mode optimises contrast and colour processing for low-latency performance.

Connectivity

Two HDMI inputs are provided — one HDMI 2.0 port supporting 4K HDR passthrough, and one HDMI 1.4 input. Additional connections include a VGA input, RS-232C for control integration, Ethernet, two 3.5mm audio inputs, a 3.5mm audio output, and a powered USB port capable of driving streaming dongles such as Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV Stick directly from the projector.

Installation Flexibility

A 1.3x optical zoom and a throw ratio of 1.21:1 to 1.59:1 provide flexibility in placement, whether table-mounted or ceiling-installed. Vertical keystone correction and vertical lens shift allow fine-tuning of the image geometry without moving the projector. An integrated 10W mono speaker provides standalone audio for casual viewing, though most users will pair the HZ40 with an external sound system for cinema-quality results.
