The KEF R7 is the mid-sized floorstander in KEF’s R Series, sitting between the compact R5 and the flagship R11. Built around KEF’s 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array — which places the 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of the 125 mm aluminium midrange cone — the R7 acts as a single point source, dispersing sound evenly across a wide listening area and enlarging the sweet spot well beyond a single seat.
Driver Technology
The Uni-Q array is surrounded by KEF’s Shadow Flare — a shallow trim ring that eliminates the tweeter’s line of sight to the cabinet edges, reducing diffraction effects that would otherwise colour the high frequencies. Below the Uni-Q sit two 165 mm (6.5 in.) hybrid aluminium bass drivers, each using a two-part construction where a shallow concave aluminium skin sits atop a paper cone. This hybrid approach combines the rigidity of aluminium with the natural damping of paper, keeping the bass drivers lighter and allowing a slimmer cabinet than a full-aluminium design.
Cabinet Construction
The R7’s cabinet is a carefully reinforced MDF structure employing Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) — a technique borrowed from KEF’s acclaimed LS50 — where damping material is sandwiched between the internal braces and cabinet panels to absorb resonances at source. The rear-firing bass reflex port is supplied with two-piece foam bungs, allowing fine-tuning of bass response when the speakers are positioned close to a rear wall. Colour-coordinated drive units are matched to each cabinet finish for a cohesive appearance.
Connectivity
Dual binding post terminals on the rear panel support both bi-wiring and bi-amping configurations, giving the option to run separate amplifier feeds to the bass and mid/treble sections for reduced interaction between frequency bands.
Setup
Each speaker is supplied with an outrigger plinth and adjustable spike feet for stability on hard floors, along with protective discs, a wrench, and hex key. The microfibre grilles are removable and magnetically attached. KEF recommend a minimum amplifier power of 15 W, with the R7 able to handle up to 250 W. Suited to medium and large rooms, the R7 delivers its best performance with some breathing space from boundaries.
