KEF R6 Meta Centre Speaker Walnut (Single)

The R6 Meta is the flagship centre channel speaker of KEF's R Series with MAT, the seven-model range that also includes the R11 Meta, R7 Meta and R5 Meta floorstanders, the R3 Meta standmount, the smaller R2 Meta centre and the R8 Meta Dolby Atmos speaker. It is the larger of the two centre speakers and uses the same 12th generation Uni-Q driver array with MAT as the R Series stereo models, so the front three channels of a home cinema system share a consistent sound character. Three-Way Closed-Box Design

Unlike the bass reflex stereo models in the range, the R6 Meta is a closed-box design, so there is no port and no port bung in the box. It is a three-way speaker: the Uni-Q array handles the treble and midrange, while two 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers, arranged symmetrically either side of it, cover the low frequencies. KEF's R Series white paper explains that this symmetrical arrangement of bass drivers around the Uni-Q gives the centre channel models a smooth and symmetrical horizontal directivity.

The bass drivers have a two-part structure in which a shallow, concave aluminium skin sits on top of a paper cone. KEF says this stiffness, combined with the cone's geometry, reduces unwanted resonances and delivers piston-like movement for punch and speed.

12th Generation Uni-Q with MAT

At the centre of the baffle is the Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 125 mm aluminium midrange cone so that the speaker acts as a single point source and disperses sound evenly through the room, eliminating the limited sweet spot. Behind the tweeter sits Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a maze-like structure in which each channel absorbs a specific frequency; combined, the channels act as an acoustic black hole that absorbs 99% of the unwanted sound from the rear of the tweeter, eliminating the resulting distortion. The 12th generation Uni-Q was redesigned to make the most of MAT, with a conical waveguide coupling the tweeter dome to the absorber and a re-engineered tweeter gap damper that places two rings of porous material to tame resonances. The midrange motor uses a copper ring embedded in the motor gap to minimise inductance, which lowers midrange distortion and reduces thermal compression.

Two features originally developed for The Reference are carried over. The Flexible Decoupling Chassis, first used on Blade and The Reference, decouples the midrange motor from the Uni-Q chassis so that its vibration is dissipated before it can travel to the cabinet. Shadow Flare is a precision-designed surface that extends the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q so that the tweeter no longer has line of sight of the cabinet edges, creating a shadow region where the potential for diffraction is highest and improving clarity and fine detail.

Cabinet, Grille and Finish

The cabinet combines a bespoke internal bracing layout with KEF's Constrained Layer Damping, which connects the bracing to the drivers and cabinet through a lossy interface that converts vibration into heat so the cabinet stays inert. The R Series is engineered to perform with or without its grille: the dedicated microfibre grille is crafted from multiple layers of material with burnished edges for a suede-like feel, has 1801 precision-cut holes for each driver and attaches with magnetic fixings. KEF describes the Walnut as a classic wood veneer finish, and it is one of three offered on every R Series model alongside Black Gloss and White Gloss. KEF's own product photography for the Walnut R6 Meta shows the wood veneer paired with copper-coloured Uni-Q and bass driver cones and a dark brown microfibre grille, so the driver and grille colours differ from those used on the gloss finishes. The cabinet measures 200 mm high, 625 mm wide and 339 mm deep including the terminal, and weighs 17.8 kg.

Connection and Placement

The terminal panel uses KEF's Link connection knobs, which allow single-wire, bi-wire or bi-amplified connection, and the binding posts accept banana plugs once their plastic caps are removed. Rubber feet are supplied to decouple the speaker from the surface it sits on, and the user manual shows the R6 Meta placed either horizontally or vertically. KEF advises aligning the centre speaker with the centre line of the screen, above or below the TV or directly behind a perforated projector screen, and says that with the wide dispersion of the Uni-Q driver array, tilting the centre speaker to align with ear level is in general not necessary.

Performance

KEF quotes a frequency response of 65 Hz to 28 kHz (±3 dB), extending from 55 Hz to 50 kHz at -6 dB, with typical in-room bass reaching 40 Hz. Sensitivity is 88 dB (2.83 V/1 m), the nominal impedance is 4 Ohms with a 3.2 Ohm minimum, maximum output is 111 dB and KEF recommends amplifiers rated between 15 and 250 W. KEF says the R6 Meta is versatile enough to be used in an LCR configuration, so three can be placed across the front of a system where identical left, centre and right speakers are wanted. As a passive speaker it needs to be driven by an AV receiver or power amplifier.
