The KEF R5 Meta sits below the R7 Meta and R11 Meta in KEF's R Series lineup, offering a slender three-way floorstanding design that delivers serious performance from a cabinet slim enough to fit into most rooms. The R5 Meta builds on the original R5 with the addition of KEF's Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) — a complex maze-like structure applied to the rear of the tweeter that absorbs 99% of unwanted rearward sound energy, reducing distortion and improving high-frequency clarity.
Driver Technology
At the heart of the R5 Meta is KEF's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25mm vented aluminium dome tweeter concentrically within a 125mm aluminium cone midrange driver. This point-source configuration ensures that high and mid frequencies radiate from the same acoustic centre, delivering consistent tonal balance across a wide listening area. The Uni-Q array crosses over at 2.7kHz, while a separate 400Hz crossover point hands off to two dedicated 130mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers mounted below.
Bass Performance
The three-way bass reflex design extends the frequency range down to 38Hz at the -6dB point, with in-room bass response reaching 29Hz. Each of the two 130mm bass drivers features a hybrid aluminium cone, and the reflex port is tuned to complement the cabinet volume for controlled, extended low-frequency output. The R5 Meta handles amplifier power from 15W up to 200W, with a maximum output capability of 110dB.
Cabinet & Build
The cabinet measures 1025 x 175 x 344mm (H x W x D) per speaker, with each speaker weighing 24.5kg. The narrow 175mm width keeps the visual footprint minimal while providing sufficient internal volume for the three-way driver complement. An adjustable plinth with spike accessories is included for stability and decoupling on both carpeted and hard floors. Precision-cut microfibre grilles attach magnetically for a clean aesthetic.
Placement & Use
With a nominal impedance of 4Ω (minimum 3.2Ω) and 87dB sensitivity, the R5 Meta is straightforward to drive with most quality amplifiers. The slim cabinet and controlled bass dispersion make placement close to rear walls more forgiving than larger floorstanders, suiting both dedicated stereo listening and home cinema front-channel duties.
