KEF R2 Meta Centre Speaker White Gloss (Single)

The R2 Meta is the compact centre channel speaker of KEF's R Series with Metamaterial Absorption Technology, the seven-model range launched in 2023 that also includes the R11 Meta, R7 Meta and R5 Meta floorstanders, the R3 Meta standmount, the larger R6 Meta centre and the R8 Meta Dolby Atmos speaker. KEF describes the R Series as a direct beneficiary of the technology developed for The Reference, and the R2 Meta is the smaller of the range's two centre speakers: it uses the same size of 12th generation Uni-Q driver array as every other model in the series, flanked by two 130 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers rather than the 165 mm units of the R6 Meta, so it matches any R Series floorstander tonally while fitting under a television in a smaller room. Three-Way Closed-Box Design

Unlike the rear-ported floorstanders and standmount in the range, the R2 Meta is a sealed, three-way closed-box design. The Uni-Q array handles the high and midrange frequencies while the two 130 mm bass drivers look after the low end, with crossover points at 560 Hz and 2.5 kHz. The bass drivers use the two-part construction shared across the R Series: a shallow, concave aluminium skin sits on top of a paper cone, and KEF says this stiffness, combined with the cone geometry, achieves a piston-like movement for punch and speed, while the magnet system creates a broad, uniform magnetic field for more impactful bass. In the R Series white paper KEF explains that the bass drivers are arranged symmetrically either side of the Uni-Q in a D'Appolito configuration, which in the centre channel models is used to give smooth, symmetrical horizontal directivity.

12th Generation Uni-Q with MAT

At the centre of the cabinet sits the 125 mm Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of the aluminium midrange cone so that the speaker behaves as a single point source and disperses sound evenly through the room, removing the narrow sweet spot. Behind the tweeter is Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a maze-like structure developed jointly with Acoustic Metamaterials Group in which each channel absorbs a specific frequency; together they act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the tweeter and eliminating the distortion it would otherwise cause. KEF's white paper puts the absorption at almost complete across the spectrum above 620 Hz, well below the tweeter's working band.

The 12th generation array has been redesigned around MAT. The conical waveguide that couples the tweeter dome to the absorber was designed specifically for this driver, a re-engineered tweeter gap damper places two rings of porous material to tame resonances, and the midrange motor carries a copper ring in the motor gap to minimise inductance, lowering midrange distortion and thermal compression. Two features from KEF's flagship ranges are also fitted. The Flexible Decoupling Chassis, first used on Blade and The Reference, decouples the midrange motor from the Uni-Q chassis so that its vibration is dissipated before it can reach the cabinet and be radiated as unwanted sound. Shadow Flare, a precisely profiled surface that extends the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q, means the tweeter no longer has a line of sight to the cabinet edges, creating a shadow region where diffraction would otherwise be highest.

Crossover and Cabinet

The R Series with MAT shares a three-way crossover topology across all models except the R8 Meta, and KEF says the new topology simplifies the tweeter filter to improve the speaker's directivity. The network was designed from a sphere of anechoic frequency response data, taken by rotating the speaker on a turntable and repeating the measurement every few degrees, so that the driver outputs combine smoothly off-axis as well as on-axis. Inside the cabinet, KEF's Constrained Layer Damping bracing connects the braces to the drivers and cabinet through a lossy interface that converts vibration into heat, keeping the enclosure inert.

Performance and System Building

KEF quotes a frequency response of 67 Hz to 28 kHz (±3 dB), extending to 58 Hz at -6 dB, with typical in-room bass reaching 43 Hz. Sensitivity is 87 dB (2.83 V/1 m), the nominal impedance is 4 Ohms with a 3.2 Ohm minimum, maximum output is 110 dB, and KEF recommends amplifiers rated between 15 and 200 W. As a passive speaker it needs to be driven by an AV receiver or amplifier. Because the same size of Uni-Q array is fitted to every model in the series, KEF says the centre and the main speakers share a consistent sound character, keeping the focus on the film rather than the equipment. The R2 Meta can also be used in an LCR configuration, so three units can be run across the front of a system where identical left, centre and right speakers are wanted. Home Cinema Choice tested it as the centre of a 5.1.2 system with R5 Meta floorstanders, R3 Meta surrounds, a pair of R8 Meta Dolby Atmos modules and a KC62 subwoofer.

Placement and Connections

KEF's manual recommends aligning the centre speaker with the centre line of the screen, above or below the television, or directly behind an acoustically transparent projector screen, and not placing it directly on the floor. Thanks to the wide dispersion of the Uni-Q array, KEF says tilting the speaker towards ear level is generally unnecessary. The supplied rubber feet decouple the cabinet from the surface it sits on and can be fitted for horizontal or vertical placement. The terminal panel supports single-wire, bi-wire and bi-amplified connections, with Link connection knobs that are tightened for single-wire use or loosened to separate the high-frequency and low-frequency sections.

Finish and Grille

The R Series is offered in two gloss finishes, Black Gloss and White Gloss, alongside a Walnut wood veneer. The White Gloss version comes with a dedicated microfibre grille made from multiple layers of material with a suede-like feel; it has 1801 precision-cut holes for each driver, and KEF says the speakers are engineered to perform with or without the grille fitted, which attaches magnetically for a secure, precise fit. The cabinet measures 175 mm high, 550 mm wide and 309 mm deep including the terminal, and weighs 15.4 kg. The grille, rubber feet, user manual and warranty information are included in the box.
