The R11 is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker in KEF's R Series, sitting just below the Reference range in the company's hierarchy. Built at GP Acoustics' facility in Maidstone, Kent, the R11 draws heavily on the engineering principles developed for the Reference series while delivering them at a more accessible price point. Its three-way, bass-reflex design pairs KEF's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) and four 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers to produce a speaker capable of deep, controlled bass extension alongside highly detailed midrange and treble reproduction.
Uni-Q with Metamaterial Absorption Technology
At the heart of the R11 is KEF's Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 125 mm aluminium cone midrange driver. This coaxial arrangement means both drivers radiate from the same point, producing a more coherent and evenly dispersed soundfield than conventional separated driver layouts. The 12th-generation Uni-Q fitted to the R11 features the Tangerine Waveguide above the treble dome, together with the continuous curve of the midrange cone and Shadow Flare surround, which terminates the waveguide smoothly to control diffraction at the baffle and driver edges.
Attached to the rear of the Uni-Q driver is KEF's MAT disc — a maze-like metamaterial structure that absorbs 99% of the unwanted rearward radiation from the tweeter dome. This technology, first developed for the LS50 Meta and now applied across KEF's designs, cleans up the high frequencies by preventing reflected energy from re-emerging through the cone. The R11's MAT implementation required a redesign of the Uni-Q back-end, incorporating a large channel running through the middle of the midrange motor to aim the rear output of the treble dome directly into the MAT disc.
Bass Driver Array and Cabinet Construction
Below the Uni-Q sits an array of four 165 mm (6.5 in.) bass drivers with hybrid aluminium cones, arranged in two pairs. Each pair operates within its own interlinked enclosure with separate reflex loading, allowing the R11 to deliver bass extension down to 26 Hz in-room (typical, −6 dB) from a cabinet just 200 mm wide. The port tubes use KEF's flexible rubber construction, which dissipates resonances within the port structure without impeding airflow. Two-piece foam bungs are provided for the rear reflex ports, enabling placement as close as 20 cm from the back wall.
The Uni-Q driver is mounted in its own sealed enclosure within the cabinet, completely isolated from the bass section. The cabinet itself is heavily braced with internal dividers coupled to the main enclosure using a viscoelastic material, and strategic damping is applied throughout to tackle standing waves. Despite its substantial output capability, the R11 remains relatively slender at 200 mm wide — though the 384 mm depth accommodates the four bass drivers and their separate reflex chambers comfortably.
Build and Finish
The R11 stands 1249 mm tall and weighs 36.5 kg per speaker. It is stabilised by spiked outriggers at the base and features a split crossover with dual 4 mm cable posts on the rear panel, allowing bi-wiring or bi-amping. The full-length grilles use microfibre material with 1,801 precision-cut holes per driver, maintaining acoustic transparency while providing protection. The R11 is available in three finishes — Gloss Black, Gloss White, and Walnut — each with matching driver trim colours and grille fabric.
