The KEF Q1 Meta is a compact two-way bookshelf speaker that delivers an exceptional listening experience well beyond what its modest dimensions might suggest. As part of KEF's acclaimed Q Meta Series, the Q1 Meta combines the brand's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array with the ground-breaking Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) to produce a level of resolution, soundstage coherence, and low distortion that sets a new standard at the entry level of serious hi-fi.
Uni-Q Driver Array
At the heart of the Q1 Meta is KEF's signature Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustical centre of a 130mm aluminium cone mid/bass driver. By co-locating both drive units at a single point source, Uni-Q ensures that high, mid, and bass frequencies radiate from the same position simultaneously. The result is an exceptionally wide and consistent sweet spot, meaning the speaker sounds equally focused whether you are seated directly on-axis or listening from across the room.
Metamaterial Absorption Technology
The 25mm tweeter is loaded with KEF's proprietary Metamaterial Absorption Technology, developed in collaboration with the University of Surrey. The MAT structure is a labyrinthine acoustic device that absorbs 99% of the unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the tweeter dome -- energy that would otherwise reflect back through the driver and colourise the output. The elimination of this rear-wave interference dramatically lowers distortion and brings a new sense of clarity and precision to the treble, revealing fine detail in recordings that lesser speakers simply obscure.
Bass Reflex Design
The Q1 Meta uses a rear-firing bass reflex port that extends low-frequency output well below what the compact 302 x 180 x 277 mm cabinet would achieve in a sealed alignment. With a frequency range reaching down to 47 Hz (-6 dB) and an in-room bass response of 42 Hz (-6 dB), the Q1 Meta produces a convincing, well-controlled bass foundation that belies its small footprint. The bass is tuned to remain clean and articulate at higher listening levels rather than being exaggerated, making the Q1 Meta a natural partner for a quality stereo amplifier or streaming amplifier.
Build Quality and Finish
KEF has finished the Q1 Meta to a standard that feels genuinely premium for its price point. The Satin Black lacquer is applied with care to the MDF cabinet, giving a sophisticated, contemporary appearance that suits both modern and traditional interiors. A magnetically attached fabric grille is included, allowing the speaker to be used with or without grille according to taste. Terminals are mounted to the rear panel and accept bare wire, spades, or 4mm banana plugs.
System Compatibility
With a sensitivity of 86 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, the Q1 Meta is best matched with an amplifier offering between 10 and 150 watts per channel. It is well-suited to compact integrated amplifiers, streaming amplifiers, and AV receivers alike. The Q1 Meta is sold as a pair and is available in Satin White, Satin Black, and Walnut finishes.
