KEF Q Concerto Meta Standmount Speakers Satin White (Pair)

The Q Concerto Meta is the largest bookshelf model in KEF's Q Series and the first three-way bookshelf speaker in the range. It sits above the two-way Q3 Meta and below the Q7 Meta floorstander, and it shares its drive units with the flagship Q11 Meta. The name revives the original 1969 Concerto, KEF's first three-way standmount speaker, in a modern cabinet with the latest Q Series technology. Three-Way Design

Where most Q Series bookshelf models use a two-way layout, the Q Concerto Meta separates the frequency range across three drivers. The Uni-Q driver array handles the high and midrange frequencies, while a dedicated 165 mm bass driver looks after the low end, with crossover points at 430 Hz and 2.9 kHz. KEF says this separation gives more precise handling of high, mid and low frequencies for greater detail and clarity, and it allows the midrange cone to work within a narrower band with far less excursion than a 2.5-way design demands.

The bass driver uses a hybrid construction with a shallow, concave aluminium skin on top of a paper cone, which stiffens the diaphragm for piston-like movement and faster, punchier bass. It is paired with a surround optimised using 3D finite element analysis to keep the cone moving in a controlled way at high output.

12th Generation Uni-Q with MAT

The 100 mm Uni-Q array places a 19 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange cone, so the speaker behaves as a single point source and disperses sound evenly around the room. Behind the tweeter sits Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), a maze-like disc developed with Acoustic Metamaterials Group in which each channel absorbs a specific frequency; together they absorb 99% of the unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the tweeter, removing a source of distortion. The 12th generation Uni-Q also brings a re-engineered tweeter gap damper, an updated midrange cone neck decoupler and structural improvements to the Tangerine waveguide compared with the previous Q Series.

Two further technologies come down from KEF's flagship ranges. The Flexible Decoupling Chassis, first used on Blade and The Reference, provides a lossy mechanical link between the Uni-Q motor system and the cabinet to reduce colouration from midrange vibration reaching the cabinet walls. Shadow Flare, a precisely profiled surface around the Uni-Q, extends the waveguide effect so the tweeter no longer has a line of sight to the cabinet edges, reducing diffraction; this is the first Q Series generation to feature it.

Bass Loading and Crossover

The previous Q Series used auxiliary bass radiators; the Q Concerto Meta instead uses a rear-firing reflex port with a flared profile modelled using computational fluid dynamics to minimise turbulence and chuffing. Port bungs are supplied so the bass output can be tuned to placement near a rear or side wall, and the manual gives distance guidance for using the full bung, part of it or none.

The crossover was developed from more than 1,000 on- and off-axis measurements taken in KEF's anechoic chamber in Maidstone, UK. By balancing the impedance requirements between the crossover components and the voice coils, KEF has eliminated the need for a conjugate network, reducing the component count in the signal path.

Performance and Partnering

KEF quotes a frequency response of 48 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB), extending to 40 Hz at -6 dB, with typical in-room bass reaching 36 Hz. Sensitivity is 85 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and the nominal impedance is 4 Ohms with a 3.2 Ohm minimum, so the speaker suits amplifiers rated between 15 and 180 W. Maximum output is 108 dB. As a passive speaker it needs an amplifier; KEF highlights it as a strong partner for a turntable system, and it can also serve as the rear pair in a Q Series home cinema layout.

Finish and What Is Included

The cabinet has the Q Series' minimalist rectilinear styling with a satin finish and colour-matched driver units. Each pair comes with magnetic colour-matched grilles, rubber feet, port bungs and the user manual. Each speaker measures 415 x 210 x 315 mm (H x W x D, including terminals) and weighs 9.5 kg.
