The KEF KUBE 12b is a sealed active subwoofer with a 300mm (12-inch) front-firing long-throw driver, purpose-built for music and home cinema in larger rooms. It sits as the largest model in the KUBE b-series — above the KUBE 10b and KUBE 8b — and is designed to extend the low-frequency performance of any main speaker system, from two-channel stereo to multichannel AV configurations.
iBX Intelligent Bass Extension
Central to the KUBE 12b's performance is iBX — KEF's Intelligent Bass Extension algorithm. Part of KEF's Music Integrity Engine suite of proprietary DSP algorithms, iBX analyses the input signal continuously and makes fine-grained real-time adjustments to unlock the full potential of the custom driver. The result is extended bass depth with greater output and increased dynamics, without sacrificing precision or distortion control — including at high listening levels where many subwoofers begin to compress.
Sealed Cabinet Design
The KUBE 12b uses a sealed cabinet rather than a ported enclosure. KEF's engineering team matched the 300W Class D amplifier and 300mm driver specifically to the available acoustic volume, enabling the amplifier to run efficiently and cool while reproducing deep bass and low-frequency transients with accuracy and control. The sealed enclosure also allows the subwoofer to be installed in a cabinet if required.
Connectivity and Integration
The KUBE 12b provides a comprehensive set of inputs to suit any system topology: LFE (Low Frequency Effects) for home cinema use, line-level RCA phono sockets for stereo integration, and speaker-level inputs for connection directly to an amplifier's loudspeaker terminals. KEF SmartConnect automatically determines whether a mono or stereo signal is being used and adjusts the subwoofer's gain accordingly, removing the need for manual level-matching in most installations.
Three DSP-controlled room placement EQ presets allow the bass output to be optimised for free-field positioning, placement against a wall, or positioning in a corner — accounting for the boundary reinforcement effect that each placement introduces. A variable low-pass filter is adjustable between 40Hz and 140Hz, or bypassed entirely in LFE mode. Phase is selectable to ensure timing alignment with the main speakers.
Power Management
The KUBE 12b supports three power-on modes: music sense, which wakes the subwoofer upon detecting an audio signal; always-on for instant readiness; and 12V trigger for integration into a dedicated home cinema system.
