The KEF Ci160QL sits within KEF's Q Series of architectural speakers — a range designed to bring high-fidelity sound to in-ceiling and flush-mount installations in both residential and premium commercial environments. As a flush-mount in-ceiling model with a rectangular cutout, it is the square counterpart to the round Ci160QR, accommodating installations where a rectangular aperture is preferred — whether for aesthetic alignment with square ceiling tiles or architectural constraints.
Uni-Q Driver Array
At the core of the Ci160QL is KEF's proprietary Uni-Q driver array, which positions a 19mm aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 160mm low-frequency woofer. This coincident point source arrangement means that high and low frequencies originate from precisely the same physical point, eliminating the acoustic lobing problems common to conventional two-driver designs where tweeter and woofer are spatially separated. The result is smooth, consistent coverage across a wide listening area — the Ci160QL achieves a nominal coverage angle of 125° — so listeners seated anywhere within the room receive the same tonal balance rather than a response that varies with position.
Tangerine Waveguide
The tweeter is fitted with KEF's Tangerine Waveguide, a precision-engineered waveguide that enhances high-frequency dispersion beyond what an unguided dome tweeter can achieve. This contributes directly to the Ci160QL's 125° coverage specification and, when combined with the Uni-Q array geometry, produces what KEF describes as a speaker that can serve a wide listening area with fewer units — a practical benefit in larger rooms or commercial installations where minimising speaker count reduces both cost and visual intrusion.
Construction and Installation
The Ci160QL is constructed using weather-resistant components finished with a UV-protective coating, making it suitable for environments with elevated humidity or temperature variation — luxury hotels, conference centres, restaurants, and covered outdoor areas alongside domestic installations. The ultra-thin ABS bezel is engineered to be as narrow as possible whilst maintaining structural integrity, and both the bezel and grille are paintable to blend with any ceiling finish. The magnetic grille attachment allows tool-free removal and replacement and includes a built-in paint shield to protect surrounding surfaces during decoration. The speaker ships as a single unit.
Installation requires a rectangular cutout of 270 × 190mm with a mounting depth of 91mm behind the ceiling surface. Optional accessories include the RIF160L rough-in frame, which allows the cutout to be prepared before plastering, and the RNC160L rear enclosure, which provides a sealed rear volume when open-ceiling plenum space is unavailable or acoustically undesirable. KEF specifies an ideal rear volume of 25 litres and a minimum of 15 litres for best low-frequency performance.
Performance
The Ci160QL covers a frequency range of 38Hz to 34kHz (±6dB, open-backed) with a sensitivity of 89dB at 2.83V/1m and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. It is rated for amplifier power between 10 and 125 watts and reaches a maximum SPL of 105dB. KEF recommends applying a high-pass filter at 45Hz to protect the driver at higher listening levels and to maintain output quality when the speaker is not used with an optional rear enclosure. The 3.0kHz crossover frequency hands over between the woofer and tweeter in the mid-range where both drivers perform optimally.
