The KEF Ci160ES sits within KEF's E Series of architectural speakers, a range designed to bring high-fidelity sound to in-ceiling and flush-mount installations where value and performance are equally important. As a 160mm in-ceiling model with a square bezel, the Ci160ES is the square counterpart to the round Ci160ER, accommodating installations where a square aperture suits the ceiling tile layout or the room's aesthetic.
Uni-Q Driver Array
At the heart of the Ci160ES is KEF's patented Uni-Q driver array, which places a 16mm aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 160mm (6.5-inch) woofer. This coincident point-source arrangement means that high and low frequencies originate from precisely the same physical location, eliminating the off-axis colouration that occurs when tweeter and woofer are spatially separated in conventional two-way designs. The result is a wide, consistent listening window; the Ci160ES achieves a nominal coverage angle of 110 degrees, so that listeners anywhere within a room receive the same tonal balance rather than a response that varies dramatically with seating position.
E Series Design and Build
The E Series was designed to deliver KEF's characteristic sound quality at an accessible price point without compromising on manufacturing standards. Each Ci160ES is built to the same exacting tolerances as KEF's premium architectural ranges, including IP64 weather-resistance certification that makes it suitable for bathroom and outdoor-covered installations where moisture resistance is required. The speaker ships with a paintable magnetic grille that clips cleanly into the bezel, and the square form factor ensures a symmetrical appearance when installed into square ceiling tile grids.
Installation Considerations
Installation requires a cutout of 194 x 194mm and a mounting depth of 85.2mm from the ceiling surface. KEF recommends a rear enclosure volume of at least 16 litres, with an ideal volume of 35 litres, to achieve the quoted bass extension; without a rear enclosure the speaker operates in open-backed mode with a frequency response extending to 52Hz (+/-6dB). The optional KEF RNC160S rear enclosure and RIF160S rough-in frame are available as accessories. With a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and sensitivity of 89dB (2.83V/1m), the Ci160ES is compatible with a wide range of amplifiers delivering between 10 and 100 watts per channel.
Application
The Ci160ES suits music listening rooms, home cinema installations, open-plan living areas, and commercial environments where a discreet, high-quality in-ceiling speaker is required. Its 110-degree coverage angle reduces the number of speakers needed to cover a given floor area evenly, and the square bezel offers a more architecturally cohesive finish in rooms with square ceiling tiles or structured interior schemes.
