The KEF Ci160CRds sits within KEF's C Series Architectural range as a specialist dual stereo in-ceiling speaker, designed for rooms where a single ceiling outlet must deliver a complete stereo image. Rather than requiring two separate speakers, its dual voice coil 160mm woofer and asymmetrical tweeter island — housing two discrete 19mm aluminium dome tweeters — independently reproduce the left and right channels in a single flush-mount assembly. This makes it well suited to bathrooms, en-suites, utility rooms, and compact spaces where installing a conventional stereo pair is impractical.
Dual Stereo Design
At the heart of the Ci160CRds is a dual voice coil bass driver, each coil driven by its own input channel. The asymmetrical tweeter island positions each 19mm aluminium dome tweeter at an angle chosen to optimise dispersion, creating channel separation within a single speaker baffle. The result is a nominal 120-degree coverage arc — wide enough to provide consistent stereo imaging across a bathroom or small room without listener hotspots. KEF's Tangerine Waveguide, fitted to each tweeter, further broadens off-axis response and smooths the dispersion pattern to ensure the listener hears both channels with natural balance.
Weather Resistance and Installation
The Ci160CRds is certified to IP64, confirming resistance to dust ingress and water splashed from any direction — a requirement for use in wet areas such as bathrooms. Its components are manufactured using a proprietary plating and powder-coating process, and the ABS bezel carries a UV-resistant protective finish. The Ultra-Thin Bezel (UTB), measuring no more than 5mm in width, keeps the speaker's visible footprint to a minimum. The grille attaches via a magnetic circuit, making removal straightforward for painting or repainting to match the ceiling. Installation uses a screw-down clamping system; all KEF 160mm round in-ceiling models share the same 196mm cut-out diameter, so the Ci160CRds can be swapped with any other 160mm C Series model without redrilling. An optional rough-in frame (RIF160R) and rear enclosure (RNC160R) are available for new-build applications.
Performance
Frequency response extends from 50Hz to 20kHz within ±6dB (open-backed), with usable output down to 45Hz at the −10dB point. Sensitivity is rated at 91dB (2.83V/1m) with a nominal 8-ohm impedance, and the speaker accepts between 10 and 80 watts from the driving amplifier. Maximum SPL is 106dB. The crossover between the bass driver and tweeters is set at 3.2kHz. KEF recommend a 50Hz high-pass filter where the amplifier or processor supports it, and an ideal rear volume of 35 litres for enclosed installations.
