The Ci130QR sits within KEF’s Ci Q Series — the company’s architectural speaker range designed for permanent installation in ceilings and walls. The Q Series represents the mid-tier of KEF’s Ci lineup, positioned above the Ci C Series and below the higher-performance Ci R Series and THX-certified models. Within the Q Series, the Ci130QR is the compact round-format model, using a 130mm driver compared to the larger 160mm and 200mm variants in the same range.
Uni-Q Driver Array
At the heart of the Ci130QR is KEF’s Uni-Q driver array, which places a 19mm aluminium-dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of the 130mm midrange/bass cone. By mounting the tweeter concentrically within the woofer, the two drivers behave as a single point source, producing a more uniform sound field across the listening area. The Ci130QR achieves a nominal coverage angle of 130°, which is significantly wider than conventional two-way ceiling speakers where the tweeter sits alongside the woofer. This wider dispersion means fewer speakers are needed to achieve even coverage across a room.
The tweeter incorporates KEF’s Tangerine Waveguide — a structure fitted over the dome that controls high-frequency dispersion, smoothing the treble response and extending the usable off-axis coverage. The result is a frequency response of 45 Hz – 34 kHz (±6 dB), covering well beyond the audible range at the top end while reaching impressively low for a 130mm driver in an open-backed ceiling configuration.
Design & Installation
The Ci130QR features KEF’s Ultra Thin Bezel design, minimising the visible rim around the speaker once installed. The overall diameter is 193mm with a cut-out requirement of just 158mm, and the speaker requires a mounting depth of 77.8mm behind the ceiling surface. The low-profile magnetic grille attaches without visible fixings and is paintable, allowing it to be colour-matched to the ceiling for a virtually invisible installation.
With an IP64 rating, the Ci130QR is protected against dust ingress and water splashes, making it suitable for installation in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms where conventional speakers would be at risk of moisture damage.
Performance
The Ci130QR has a sensitivity of 87 dB (2.83V/1m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, making it straightforward to drive from any standard amplifier or AV receiver. KEF recommends amplifier power between 10W and 100W. The speaker is capable of a maximum sound pressure level of 103 dB, providing ample headroom for both background music and cinematic surround-sound duties. The crossover point between the bass/midrange driver and the tweeter is set at 3.8 kHz.
The Ci130QR is particularly well suited to Dolby Atmos height channels, where its wide 130° dispersion pattern creates a convincing overhead soundstage without the need for precise listener positioning directly beneath the speaker. It is equally at home in multi-room audio installations and dedicated home cinema ceilings.
