The Focal Kanta N°2 sits at the heart of Focal's Kanta range of premium floorstanding loudspeakers, positioned above the compact Kanta N°1 bookshelf speaker and below the flagship Kanta N°3 floorstander. Introduced in October 2017, the Kanta N°2 combines Focal's most advanced driver technologies with a bold, contemporary cabinet design made in Saint-Etienne, France.
Driver Technology
The Kanta N°2 is a three-way bass-reflex design, incorporating four driver elements: one IAL3 inverted Beryllium dome tweeter (27mm), one 165mm (6.5-inch) Flax midrange driver with TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension, and two 165mm Flax bass drivers. The IAL3 tweeter integrates Focal's Infinite Acoustic Loading and Infinite Horn Loading technologies, handcrafted in France from a pure Beryllium diaphragm for extremely low distortion and extended high-frequency response to 40kHz.
The Flax cone drivers use a sandwich construction: high-quality natural flax fibres form the core between two thin glass-fibre skins. This composite delivers a combination of low mass, high rigidity, and excellent internal damping, resulting in precise transient response and natural timbre. The midrange driver uses TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension, which adds a secondary resonator to the surround to control break-up modes, while both woofers and the midrange use NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit) motor technology to stabilise the magnetic flux and reduce modulation distortion.
Cabinet and Design
The cabinet rear shell is moulded from multi-ply wood, while the front baffle is a single-piece high-density polymer (HDP) moulding that is 70% denser, 15% more rigid, and 25% better damped than conventional MDF baffles. The baffle profile allows Focal's Focus Time driver alignment, which positions each driver so that all sound sources arrive at the listening position simultaneously.
The Kanta N°2 uses dual Power Port reflex ports, one at the front and one at the rear, to extend low-frequency response. The Zamak alloy base incorporates adjustable spikes for levelling, and a glass plate tops the cabinet. Magnetic beret-type grilles are included.
In this Walnut/Black Matte configuration, the cabinet sides feature a natural walnut high-gloss veneer paired with a Black Matte high-density polymer front baffle, creating a refined, contemporary contrast between textures.
Connectivity
Connection is via a single pair of high-quality binding posts on the rear panel, accepting bare wire, spade terminals, or banana plugs. The speaker presents a nominal impedance of 8 ohms with a minimum of 3.1 ohms, making it compatible with a wide range of amplifiers, with a recommended power range of 40 to 300 watts.
