The Audiolab D7 is a high-resolution digital-to-analogue converter that marks the brand’s return to dedicated standalone DAC components. Positioned below the flagship D9, both models are direct descendants of the legendary M-DAC—the ESS Sabre-based DAC that dominated its category for over five years after launching in 2011. The D7 distils that lineage into a compact, affordable unit while retaining the engineering principles that defined its predecessor.

DAC Architecture & Signal Processing

At its core is the ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M—a 32-bit, dual-channel DAC chip also used in Audiolab’s 7000A and 6000A MkII integrated amplifiers. The chip implements ESS’s HyperStream II modulator architecture alongside a Time Domain Jitter Eliminator to minimise clock-related distortion. Audiolab emphasises that while the ES9038Q2M is capable of excellent resolution, products using it can sound harsh or thin if insufficient care is taken with the surrounding circuitry. The D7’s design addresses this with independent low-noise power supplies for critical stages, a differential balanced signal path, and careful physical circuit layout to protect audio signals from interference.

Five selectable DAC reconstruction filters allow the user to tailor the sound character to suit different source material and system pairings. Full MQA decoding is built in, performing the complete three-unfold process internally rather than relying on a connected device to handle the first unfold.

Connectivity

Digital inputs are comprehensive for a unit of this size. Four S/PDIF connections—two coaxial and two optical—handle sources up to 24-bit/192 kHz PCM. A USB Type-B input supports computer, tablet, and smartphone audio at up to 32-bit/768 kHz PCM and DSD512 (22.5792 MHz). A USB Type-A port on the front panel accepts external storage devices for direct file playback (up to 96 kHz), navigated via the built-in OLED display. Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD codec support provides wireless connectivity.

Analogue outputs include balanced XLR and single-ended RCA, both available in fixed or variable modes. Variable output enables direct connection to a power amplifier or active speakers without a separate preamplifier, while fixed mode suits integration with an integrated amplifier. Optical and coaxial digital outputs are also provided for onward digital processing. Two 12V trigger outputs allow synchronised power-on/off with other components in the system.

Headphone Amplifier

The built-in headphone amplifier uses a current-feedback topology matching that of the 7000A, delivering up to 600 mW across a 20–600 ohm load impedance range. Output impedance is 2.35 ohms, with distortion below 0.01% at 1 kHz and 50 mW. The 6.35 mm headphone socket is mounted on the front panel.

Design & Build

The D7 is housed in a compact aluminium chassis measuring 180 × 56 × 208 mm (W × H × D) and weighing 1.42 kg. It is styled to match Audiolab’s 6000 and 7000 series components with the same clean, understated aesthetic. A monochrome OLED display and tactile rotary controls provide source selection and menu navigation. Power is supplied via an external adapter, keeping the internal signal path free from mains transformer interference. Standby consumption is below 0.5 W.
