The Acoustic Energy AE520 is the flagship floor-standing loudspeaker of the 500 Series, sitting above the AE509 and the standmount AE500. It is a powerful, slim-line tower designed for medium to large rooms, combining Acoustic Energy’s latest carbon fibre drive units with RSC (Resonance Suppression Composite) cabinet construction to deliver controlled bass, strong dynamics and a detailed, transparent presentation.
Driver Technology
The AE520 deploys six drive units in a 3-way configuration: two dedicated 125 mm carbon fibre midrange drivers, three 125 mm carbon fibre bass drivers and a 25 mm carbon fibre dome tweeter. Using carbon fibre across the entire driver complement ensures perfect tonal matching from the lowest bass through to the highest frequencies. The carbon fibre cone material is lighter and better damped than typical hard-dome alternatives, delivering fast transient response and improved clarity.
Midrange and Bass
The midrange drivers feature oversized 35 mm voice coils for low thermal compression and a high motor force factor, yielding a highly dynamic yet controlled response. Each midrange unit operates in its own sealed sub-enclosure to minimise interaction with the bass drivers and reduce colouration. The three dedicated bass drivers are reflex loaded via a large rear-firing rectangular port, providing deep extension to 30 Hz and strong dynamic headroom with a peak SPL of 113 dB.
Tweeter
The 500 Series tweeter uses a 25 mm carbon fibre dome that is significantly lighter and better damped than other typical hard dome materials, producing a fast, natural sound. A cast aluminium waveguide positioned close to the midrange driver improves high-frequency dispersion and is extremely stiff to prevent vibration being transmitted to the tweeter, ensuring smooth, open highs even at elevated listening levels.
Crossover
The 3-way crossover network uses high-voltage polypropylene film-wound capacitors and air-core inductors at critical locations. The crossover points are set at 373 Hz and 2.8 kHz, optimising dispersion through a smaller acoustic source size within the crossover region. This arrangement keeps the midrange drivers operating in their most linear bandwidth while allowing the bass section to handle low frequencies without interference.
Cabinet Construction
The AE520’s cabinet uses 18 mm Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) panels, a constrained-layer composite technology evolved from Acoustic Energy’s prestigious Reference Series. RSC construction greatly reduces cabinet acoustic radiation that would otherwise colour the sound, allowing the drivers’ performance to be heard without cabinet-induced smearing of fine detail. Slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles attach without visible fixings.
