Acoustic Energy AE500 Bookshelf Speakers American Walnut (Pair)

The Acoustic Energy AE500 is the bookshelf loudspeaker in the flagship 500 Series — the most advanced range in Acoustic Energy’s current line-up, sitting above the entry-level 100 Series and the mid-range 300 Series. It pairs a 125 mm carbon fibre mid/bass driver with a 25 mm carbon fibre dome tweeter inside a Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) cabinet, delivering a neutral, transparent and highly detailed sound from a compact enclosure.

Carbon fibre drive units

Both the mid/bass driver and the tweeter use carbon fibre diaphragms. Carbon fibre is lighter and better damped than other typical hard dome materials, which helps produce a sweet, natural high-frequency response with low distortion and excellent transient attack. The 125 mm mid/bass cone features an oversized 35 mm voice coil and an optimised motor and suspension system, enabling high power handling and controlled, dynamic bass from the compact cabinet.

WDT waveguide tweeter

The carbon fibre dome tweeter is mounted in a rigid cast aluminium Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide, positioned close to the mid/bass driver. This arrangement optimises dispersion across the listening area and ensures smooth integration between the drivers, maintaining clarity and composure even at higher listening levels.

RSC cabinet construction

The AE500’s cabinet uses Acoustic Energy’s Resonance Suppression Composite technology, derived from the Reference Series. RSC is a constrained-layer construction comprising a 6 mm MDF inner wall, a 3 mm bitumen damping layer and a 9 mm MDF outer wall, compressed together to form an 18 mm composite panel. This sandwich effectively suppresses cabinet-wall radiation and reduces colouration, allowing more of the driver detail to be heard.

Reflex-loaded design

The AE500 uses a rear-firing slot-loaded reflex port, tuned to extend bass response down to 45 Hz (±6 dB). Despite its compact 310 mm height, the speaker achieves a peak SPL of 113 dB and handles up to 120 W, making it well suited to both near-field listening and larger rooms when paired with quality amplification.
