The Acoustic Energy AE109 Mk 2 is the flagship floorstanding speaker in Acoustic Energy's 100 Series, designed to deliver room-filling performance from a slim-line cabinet. Drawing on design principles from the award-winning 500 Series, the AE109 Mk 2 pairs two 130mm paper cone mid/bass drivers with an ultra-high force motor system alongside a 25mm soft dome tweeter fitted with a Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide, producing a wide, even soundstage across the listening area.
Driver Technology & Crossover
The 2.5-way crossover topology, with crossover points at 275Hz and 2.5kHz, allows the twin 130mm drivers to share bass duties while one handles the midrange alone. This arrangement provides the extended low-frequency reach of a larger cabinet from a speaker just 165mm wide. The paper cone drivers use an ultra-high force motor system for tight, controlled bass response, while the 25mm soft dome tweeter extends to 26kHz for detailed high-frequency reproduction.
Cabinet Construction
The enclosure is built from 15mm High Density Fibreboard (HDF) with carefully tuned internal bracing to reduce harmful resonances whilst retaining body and substance. A rear slot port design provides smooth bass extension with minimal room interaction, allowing flexible placement closer to rear walls than a conventional circular port would permit. The AE109 Mk 2 also features inert mass-loading for additional stability and acoustic damping, further controlling cabinet vibrations. Slim magnetic cloth grilles are included, attaching flush to the baffle for a clean appearance.
Placement & Compatibility
The AE109 Mk 2 is voiced to integrate with other speakers in the Acoustic Energy 100 Series, making it suitable as stereo front channels in a surround sound system alongside the AE100 Mk 2 bookshelf, AE105 on-wall, and AE107 Mk 2 centre channel. With 89dB sensitivity and 6 ohm nominal impedance, the AE109 Mk 2 is an easy load for most integrated amplifiers, handling up to 175W of power.
