The Acoustic Energy AE100² is the entry point to the brand's current loudspeaker range, sitting below the AE300² and AE500 in the line-up. A ground-up redesign of the original 100 Series rather than a simple refresh, it draws directly on engineering developed for the premium 500 Series to deliver performance well beyond what its price and dimensions might suggest.
Drive Unit Technology
The AE100² is built around a 130mm paper-cone mid/bass driver on an ultra-high-force, long-throw motor system — the same topology that underpins the 500 Series. The long-throw excursion allows the driver to move more air and sustain dynamic peaks cleanly, producing a full-bodied, controlled bass response that is uncommon in speakers of this size. The 25mm fabric dome tweeter is integrated into Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide: the waveguide geometry has been tuned to create a wide, consistent coverage pattern, maintaining smooth treble output across a broad listening area rather than concentrating the sweet spot in a single listening position.
Cabinet Engineering
The cabinet uses 15mm HDF (High Density Fibreboard) in place of the standard MDF more typically used at this price point. HDF's higher density allows thinner wall panels with no sacrifice in stiffness or mass, which increases the internal volume available for bass loading within the same external footprint. The rear panel carries a slot-shaped port rather than a conventional circular vent: the larger cross-sectional area of the slot reduces the velocity of air exiting the enclosure, minimising turbulence noise at higher output levels. The port geometry is tuned to extend bass response to 51Hz at the lower boundary.
Finish and Practical Details
Cabinet edges are gently radiused in a nod to the 500 Series aesthetic. The vinyl veneer finish is available in Black, Satin White, and Walnut. Slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles are included and can be removed without visible fixing points on the baffle. A single pair of binding posts on the rear panel accepts 4mm banana plugs or bare wire. The AE100² is suitable for placement on dedicated speaker stands or a bookshelf; the rear port requires adequate clearance from the back wall, typically at least 20–30cm for unobstructed airflow.
