The Wharfedale Super Denton is the latest and most ambitious entry in Wharfedale's celebrated Heritage series, a line that began in 2014 with the Denton 80 anniversary model and has since grown to include the Linton, Dovedale and Super Linton. Where those models drew on the two-way Denton heritage, the Super Denton reaches further back, to the Denton 3 of 1971: the smallest three-way loudspeaker available at its time of launch, claimed to match the performance of speakers far larger. The Super Denton revisits that brief using entirely modern technology, producing a compact three-way standmount that honours a genuine piece of hi-fi history.
Heritage Design
Measuring 360 x 246 x 275 mm, the Super Denton occupies a similar footprint to the original Denton 3, making it one of the smallest three-way hi-fi speakers produced today. The cabinet is beautifully hand-veneered in Black Oak and fitted with a traditional cloth grille, recalling the classic Wharfedale aesthetic. Cabinet construction uses an inner layer of high-density particle board bonded to an outer MDF skin by a resonance-damping adhesive layer, deliberately combining materials with differing resonant signatures to scatter panel vibrations rather than allowing a single dominant cabinet colouration. Critically placed internal bracing and long-hair fibre acoustic damping are used throughout. The midrange and treble drivers each have their own rear enclosures within the main cabinet, isolating them from the back-wave of the bass unit for a cleaner, more coherent crossover transition.
Three-Way Driver Configuration
The bass section uses a 165 mm (6.5 in) black woven Kevlar cone driver in a premium cast chassis, tuned to the cabinet for extension to 40 Hz at -6 dB, below the fundamental E of a standard bass guitar. A 50 mm (2 in) soft-dome midrange unit, developed from technology in Wharfedale's award-winning EVO4 range, handles the upper midrange and lower treble with wide dispersion, providing a seamless handover between the bass and treble sections. A 25 mm (1 in) soft-dome tweeter completes the complement. Crossover points are set at 940 Hz and 4.6 kHz. The midrange and tweeter are offset slightly from the baffle centre to scatter edge diffraction and maintain the cabinet's compact dimensions. Even the grille incorporates internal shaping to maximise driver output and minimise edge reflections.
Acoustic Performance
Sensitivity of 87 dB (2.83 V at 1 m) and a nominal 6-ohm impedance make the Super Denton suitable for amplifiers from 25 to 120 W per channel, covering most modern integrated amplifiers comfortably. The three-way driver array enables the bass driver to focus entirely on low frequencies while the dome midrange handles the critical vocal and instrumental range independently, a topology that reduces intermodulation distortion and gives the Super Denton a transparency and spatial precision that two-way designs find harder to achieve at this size. In Black Oak finish, the Super Denton makes a particularly striking visual statement while remaining entirely at home on a bookshelf or stand in any listening room.
