The Wharfedale Diamond IW-2 is the larger of two in-wall models in the Diamond architectural range, designed for flush-mount installation where a freestanding speaker would intrude on the room. Drawing on the acoustic engineering developed for the long-running Diamond bookshelf and floorstanding series, the IW-2 brings full-bodied stereo or home cinema performance to walls without the visual footprint of a conventional cabinet.
Two-Way D'Appolito Driver Array
The IW-2 uses a two-way driver configuration arranged in a symmetrical D'Appolito layout, with a 1-inch (25mm) textile dome tweeter flanked above and below by two 6.5-inch (150mm) advanced polypropylene bass drivers. This vertical alignment focuses dispersion towards the horizontal listening plane and helps maintain consistent tonal balance across a typical seated listening area. The textile dome tweeter handles frequencies above the 2.8kHz crossover point and extends response cleanly to 20kHz.
Sealed Enclosure
Unlike many in-wall speakers that rely on the wall cavity as part of the acoustic load, the IW-2 is built around a fully enclosed closed-box cabinet of 7.8 litres internal volume. The sealed enclosure decouples the speaker from variations in wall construction and cavity dimensions, delivering a more consistent bass response from installation to installation. The bass extends to 85Hz at the -6dB point, with the in-room low-frequency lift typical of wall-mounted speakers contributing further reinforcement.
White Finish and Paintable Grille
This white-finish variant of the IW-2 ships with a white baffle and a magnetic cloth grille that can be painted to match any wall colour. Once installed and grille-fitted, the speaker presents a flush, minimal profile against the wall. A black gloss side panel is also visible at certain mounting depths, but with the grille in place the IW-2 reads as a simple white rectangle.
Installation
The IW-2 is designed for installation in stud walls or purpose-built cavities of sufficient depth to accommodate its 141mm overall depth including grille and bracket. The pre-attached flange and mounting tabs accept the supplied L-type brackets and screws. Optional accessories include a W wall bracket and additional hanging buckles for solid-wall installations. Connection is via gold-plated binding-post terminals on the rear panel, accepting bare wire, banana plugs or spade connectors.
Diamond Heritage
Wharfedale introduced the Diamond series in 1981, and successive generations have remained among the most recognised loudspeakers in British hi-fi. The IW-2 carries that lineage into custom installation, sharing tuning philosophy and driver technology with its in-room Diamond siblings while addressing the specific challenges of flush-wall mounting.
