The Wharfedale Evo 5.4 is the flagship floorstanding speaker in the Evo 5 Series — a range that builds on the multi-award-winning Evo 4 platform with refined cabinet design, upgraded driver technology, and Wharfedale’s latest acoustic damping innovations. Sitting above the Evo 5.3, the 5.4 adds a dedicated dome midrange driver to deliver a true 3-way design with greater separation between frequency bands.
AMT Tweeter with SilentWeave Damping
Derived from Wharfedale’s high-end Elysian project, the Evo 5.4’s Air Motion Transformer (AMT) measures 35 × 70mm — larger than the 30 × 60mm unit in the Evo 4 series. The pleated diaphragm moves four times more air than a traditional dome tweeter of the same surface area, reducing distortion and improving transient response. Surrounding the AMT is SilentWeave™, a specially developed combination of cotton and felt fibre that absorbs unwanted high-frequency reflections from the baffle surface.
Dedicated Dome Midrange
The 50mm soft-dome midrange driver is dedicated exclusively to vocal and midrange instrument reproduction. Wharfedale’s ResoSeal™ technology — a thin mass ring of elastomer applied to the rear of the cone — optimises the driver’s response for richer, more natural vocal reproduction. This dedicated midrange is what distinguishes the 3-way Evo 5.4 from the 2.5-way Evo 5.3.
Twin Kevlar Bass Drivers
Two 150mm (6.5″) black woven Kevlar-coned bass drivers provide deep, controlled low-frequency extension down to 42 Hz (±3 dB), with bass extension reaching 36 Hz at −6 dB. The long-throw design, combined with a generous 59.5-litre cabinet volume, ensures the Evo 5.4 delivers authoritative bass without strain. ResoFrame™ damping on each driver chassis minimises mechanical resonances that would otherwise colour the sound.
Slot-Loaded Profiled Port
Rather than a conventional rear-firing reflex port, the Evo 5.4 uses Wharfedale’s three-directional SLPP (Slot-Loaded Profiled Port) system. By distributing exhaust airflow equally to the left, right, and rear of the cabinet, the SLPP reduces port turbulence and delivers more controlled bass integration. This design also makes the speakers less sensitive to rear-wall proximity than a single rear port would be.
Cabinet Construction
The cabinet is constructed from a sandwich of materials optimised for the largest possible internal volume while maintaining structural rigidity. The smoothly contoured side panels reduce internal standing waves compared to flat-sided enclosures. At 1028mm tall and 31.2 kg each, the Evo 5.4 is a substantial speaker that suits medium to large listening rooms.
